certainly will do, I got such a bargain on the car that I won't charge you for the brocolli. You can come down and collect it whenever you fancy really and there'll probably be a nice warm shandy waiting too

You are right though, it is a shopping trolley... comes with the caged basket and new castors all round

FWD French toss...;)

A guy who used to hang around on the VOC forum swore blind that the 300 series axles used to bend with age & abuse, and that the cars handled much better when they were 'tight' and new...and when the wheels pointed in the right direction. sm56 Maybe there was some truth in it after all...

I was going to do a fresh post about this, but found this one. I also have had alot of experience of axle bending and looking at various cars, changing axles. Etc. I have also have had the privilege of driving new 360 GLTs etc. I have spent the last 20 years trying to get my cars back to that.

I am convinced that it is a result of hard cornering and acceleration. My first car a 1980 340 1.4 DL got bent so badly it was quite dangerous when I went through puddles, the car would nearly spin. I found pretty much all cars have toe-in to so degree, there is some on the spec, but I've never actually measure it. The better tyres and suspension you put on the worse it tends to get.

The anti tramp bar makes the bending force uneven and protects the RHS a bit, as a result the left is always toe'd in more.

My 940 is much straighter and much more predictable to drive, although a bit of a bus even with lowered uprated suspension.

On my overhaul I was planning to cut 99% through the middle/bend back into shape / reweld. Anyone any experience doing this.

That's what that guy I was talking about before used to to...chop and weld. Make up a jig, and get to it! :) You should be able to leave a good chunk of one side in place, mind...

Yeah I remember him Foggy, TonyS I think was his username. Anyway, he is right. I've had my car alignment checked a few times over the years I've owned it after fitting new components etc, and you can see the toe in increasing by fractional amounts every time its been measured. I haven't, until last year, had any accidents in it, so its gotta just be aging.

Unfortunately I just think the DeDion axle isn't quite thick enough to deal with the driving force on the rear wheels, especially from the 360 GLT, when the original design was built for the Daf33 with a 1.3? engine and the extra power just causes the metal to 'creep' slightly. The anti-tramp bar on the RHS does seem to hold that side in better so you get a slight uneven-ness between the sides with time too.

I don't see anything wrong with cutting the axle down the middle, rigging up some sort of jig and carefully welding it back together again, but its difficult to do in practice. I wondered if its possible to just use 'reverse' force on some sort of jig to bend it back rather than cutting and re-welding?

Yeah, that was him - Tony Stanley. He also point blank refused to believe 360s ever came with AC. He seemed to like to know it all, and left after a while when he kept getting proved wrong

I'm sure it's possible in theory to 'bend' it back...but I think it'd prove easier just to weld it.

I see, disappointing to be remembered as a know it all twat, sorry to have offended. Maybe it was the atmosphere why I left before. TBH I don't actually remember being here before, never mind it being important whether any 360 existed with AC in the UK.

^^^^^^^^^^^ that's so going in my novel.
Awkward pause between the last two posts.
Comic genius.

Tony, I think you've been a great help already under your new Psudanim, and if all the Know It All Twats upped and left, there'd be no v3m.

Ride on.

Haha...small world! No offence intended, Tony. I just remembered you debating certain points with considerable vigour, and then disappearing one day. That was over on the VOC forum...and it must be 4-5 years ago.

Having said that, it's pretty unfair of me not to have mentioned that you made a considerable contribution while you were around...and I look forward to hearing more from you now you're back!

cheers

I 'found' this site recently while researching for restarting my 360 overhaul and was most impressed that someone correctly diagnosed the 340 1.4 breather restriction. I think it was on the later car with the combined T piece/restriction but never the less a very knowledgeable diagnosis without looking at the car. That and all this stuff about drifting and seemingly loads of people with Turbos and drifters, making your own parts, all very impressive.

I havn't done that much with the 360 for about 10 years and been driving a 940 for about 8 years, it been sitting in a family members garage, but now I have a garage and have moved it. I'm not quite sure now whether to Turbo it as I always planned (I have the opportunity of a pretty good free 940 Turbo SE), or convert it to electric. Life goals change a bit as you get older :-)

Turbo it...it's rude not to, given how well it fits!

The breather restrictor was an interesting one before it got shouted from the rooftops. I certainly fell victim to it, until someone pointed out that I probably needed that barely detectable hard lump in the hose! :)

you should know about the weird stuff i diagnose in holland, even by phone or without ever looking at the car. that makes a missing crankcase breather restriction easy compared to those :D

i've even fixed cars up at the doorstep of the volvo dealer when they didn't knew what to do anymore how cool is that 8)

Well I don't know about the dealers over there, but it's wholly believeable based on how competent most of them are over here...
