Re: 340 1.4 engine/ engine swap questionS
Yeah dude, there's a lot of info on here, all the 'easy' swaps have been covered. Basically, the 1.7 and 1.4 are very similar. In terms of engine swaps, the only differences are the bellhousing, lower rear passenger side engine mount bracket, both front engine mounts, and some water hoses. Most popular choices are clio 16v/williams F7P/F7R or 440turbo B18FT.
Help us out a bit, how much power would you like, and how much money would you like to chuck at it?

Re: 340 1.4 engine/ engine swap questionS
quite simply, the cheaper the better.Training to become mechanic, so labour will be free
:D
but €500-600 should be do-able for bits.
also dont need huge power, but from being jap for a good while, I have my love for turbo's....
also filthyjohn, you seem to have a good bit of info, do those 2l clio williams engines bolt directly onto the 1.4 bellhousing....?
if it doesn't, what does?I want a quick, easy swap as I need a car on the road LOL

Re: 340 1.4 engine/ engine swap questionS
1.4 bellhousing leaves you Renault 5 GT turbo engine and that's about it. Lots of people like them, they're capable of 300hp but I think they're quite hard to get hold of and pricey. The bigger, later renaults fit the 1.7 though, and under £100 should get you the 1.7 bits that differ. SUMP, I forgot the sump is different. If you like turbos there's the 440/480 turbo engine.

Re: 340 1.4 engine/ engine swap questionS
I was only jus thinking about the GTT engine, but they seem to have died off at the same time as huge fibreglass bodykits and ridiculously huge wheels....(bar american cars fo course)
so the 440/80 engines are a straight fit also..?I know the 440, had one before.
the 480 is the really-wierd shaped (could call it wedge-shaped..?) volvo, or am I wrong??

Re: 340 1.4 engine/ engine swap questionS
Yeah you're thinking of this I think:

It's not quite a straight fit, you'll need the sump, bellhousing and engine mounts from a 1.7 and the whole engine loom (both ECUs) from the 440/460/480.

Re: 340 1.4 engine/ engine swap questionS
Two of the three... theres another ecu looking box that does random stuff, like make the windscreen wipers work every third thursday as long as your had curry on the previous monday. The turbo is interesting it's been done a few times. It's a hell of a lot easier to do an F7R/P though, and the revvy nature suits 300 driving with give or take the same power.filthyjohn wrote:It's not quite a straight fit, you'll need the sump, bellhousing and engine mounts from a 1.7 and the whole engine loom (both ECUs) from the 440/460/480.
Stock turbo is 125, F7P high 130s and R high 140s I think I'm not up on the renault stuff. Tubby can be tuned very easily though.

Re: 340 1.4 engine/ engine swap questionS
F7p = 1.8 16v = 138 bhp (thats with cat)
F7r = 2.0 16v = 150 bhp.
B18FT = 1.8 8v turbo = 125
But NA tuning a F7p/r gets quite expencive above 160 bhp or so...Tuning a B18FT is loads cheaper. Chip it, and youve got 155 I believe. And then there are loads of improvements to make, untill you reach upper capacity of the engine.
Are you glad enough with approx max 160 bhp? Stick to F7p/r. B18FT is a lot more difficult and expencive.
Edit: I think the biggest deal is just the feeling about it. I love that square F7p brick that rev's like hell...Others like the 'PSSSSSsssh!'

175 with ~250nm with a Richmod. When they were more commonly available it was ~50quid for 50 ponies, which you'll not see anywhere else.pistonpen paultje wrote:Chip it, and youve got 155 I believe. And then there are loads of improvements to make, untill you reach upper capacity of the engine.
Spot on, thats the only reason I started my turbo.pistonpen paultje wrote: Edit: I think the biggest deal is just the feeling about it. I love that square F7p brick that rev's like hell...Others like the 'PSSSSSsssh!'
