float on a weber 32 dir is very unlikely to fail, unlike the 1.7's solex carb floats wich allmost need replacing every normal service...
the torn gasket is the biggest problem, any airleak and the b14 will run terrible, and the floaterchambergasket is also a weak point..

couldnt see any muck it the jets but blasted them anyway seems to be a bit better, but Ive not tried it on a long run, I would still like to get hold of a new gasket since that one is knackered at the moment and would like the car to be semi reliable

Aldon are a pretty reputable company around this way for oldskool carb engines. I've seen they have carb kits on that site also, if you can't find the specific model or unsure try just giving em a call?
