GLE sold for a pretty strong price, lovely car though. Shame it's a Mk3
Yes, that GLT is a dent... £300 without tax or MOT

Ok, time to show my ignorance. The Mk1 is obviously the first 300 with the separate 'nose cone' etc and the Mk2 obviously came next but I'm unclear as to the Mk3 - does this refer to the very late models with different steering wheel and broader side mouldings etc and if so when did the Mk2 give way to the Mk3?
Don't snigger, I can't know everything. I've only owned 300s on and off for the last ten years...

Dunno dates, but Mk3s also had the grid (not strip) style rear clusters, and no panel betweel headlights and front bumper.
Mk2
Mk3

Bumpers are also bigger. The facelift for mk3s was all of a sudden wheras the mk1s and 2s merged slowly over time. I think also the mk3 facelift was a new design by Volvo whereas the mk1s/2s nicked ideas from Daf.

The mk2 / mk3 transition was for the 1986 model year. Generally, B reg cars will be mk2, and C reg ones will be mk3s...although there are a few C reg mk2s out there.
Exterior changes were different bumpers, different tailgate, different rear lights, different front and rear spoilers (where fitted) indicator repeaters moved to the front bumper, front number plate moved to the valance, and the metal strip below the headlights replaced with an extended section of the plastic bumper...erm...I think that's about it.
The transition from mk1 to mk2 was far less 'definitive'...Strictly speaking the changeover was for the 1982 model year, but the "classic" mk1 ended in 1980, and the "classic" mk2 began in 1983, with 81 and 82 being transitional years.

Thanks for the pics, nice to see my old car again - I'm still not sure why I sold it...
I'm still slightly confused though. My car is a 1987 on an E plate but it has the old type steering wheel and narrow side mouldings whilst my previous J plate CVT had the later steering wheel and broad side mouldings. Are they both known as MK3s or is the later car a Mk3.5...?
Just a thought

Steering wheel is more a 340 vs 360 thing, rather than a late early thing. Narrow spindly one with 2 horn buttons == 340 and entire thing a horn push == 360. Same with the door mouldings.
On the very last 340's, they put all the posh shiney bits from the shelf onto the cars, so the GL'd 1991 340's came out looking pretty much like 360's without colour coded bumpers.

From memory, 340 GLEs had the big side mouldings, as did pretty much all 1990 / 1991 340s. They started putting the 360-style steering wheels on the late 340s. Might have been a concious effort to help sell an increasingly outdated model...might have been that they had a big box of fancy bits left over!
There have always been strange conventions, and odd cars, etc (for example, my 1980 343 DL has everything a GL should have...in fact, by having a sunroof it's actually higher-spec than my 1981 343 GL), and there were subtle (or sometimes less subtle) changes with each model year. However, you can pretty much group them together into three basic bodystyles - when the most radical changes happened - mk1 (1976 - 1981), mk2 (1982 - 1985) and mk3 (1986 - 1991). The cars in each of these groups look the "most" like each other, basically, even if they're not exactly alike - the bumper change between 1976-1980 and 1981 model years being possibly the best example.
