I pulled the output shaft from the diff, the flange threads are damaged but I was able to drive a bolt through from the rear and then back in from the front. Not happy with it though. I will need a new set of bolts minimum as they are all damaged. 1 is snapped, 1 is bent and all threads are damaged. I may just try new bolts for now with loads of threadlock before I go looking for another diff, I doubt anyone would be willing to give up just a shaft.

Thats quite abnormal, I've taken CVs off many times, with all models and never had a problem. I even broke a diff once (1980 1.4).
Why do you think the bracket is damaged? Did the CV rotate round and hit the bracket or did the bracket failure cause the CV to twist too much?
Did you torque the bolts properly, they are highly stressed and need done just right?
Battery light - could be dashboard, check the field bias resistor.

On further investigation I can see that I had put the mounts back together wrong. I had put the rubber ring in upside down.
This was allowing the bush (which had delaminated from the cup) to move around. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Seems the movement was too much, caused the failure of the mount, this allowed the box to move and I'm guessing the diff lifting too far caused the half shaft to pull out. Expensive mistake. I have had to rent a car to get to work as I managed to crash my spare car a few days after this happened. I have two mounts coming in the post I got off a fella in Lancashire. Used but in ok condition. I need to get this back on the road or I will be forced to buy another car. The rental is costing a fortune.
@Mark.
I have a car and a few days off work so I would be able to come up this week to collect if you do have that box handy? I can take the lot if it helps? How much would you take for it?
