I've done mine there, just as described above with a template to let in. It's a swine, as you are trapping in a surface you can't get to paint. I'm keeping a careful eye for when mine go again, think I'll try and put a drain/paint hole in my next patch.

chrisc:thats what im worried about, ive just unbolted that little panel to check behind it, thin i might tae it cac off when its welded and blast some wax oil or something inside,

need some more advice, should i cut nd pry this bit off to check for rust under it?


as you can see at the end were its pitted there was rust,so could have spread under that?

I just cut off the entire overlapping bit, repaired the box section, ground it down, then welded in the overlapping bit, plug and seam welded it. Zinga paint inbetween layers.

Here's a thread with pics of my attempt at the repair in 2010. Passed MOT 2011 and 2011. Should be OK I hope for this year too. I know it's a luxury, but to keep the rust at bay, basically I don't drive much in the rain, I use the truck or wife's car! (Having said that I did drive to Cornwall and back this time last year in rain/salt and snow!!). The car is on the road through the winter but I don't use it a lot and not at all if the roads are salted! It is stored outside however. A good waterproof cover is worth getting, bit of a pain to keep covering/uncovering, but worth not having the constant dripping of water through the bodywork/drain holes and constant dampness everywhere.

Ah yeah and after you're done, slap on some Dinitrol underseal. I put it on exposed metal once after some rust work, survived one of the harshes winters without rust.

had a few people wondering were im at with this, i am still working on it (slowly) will be going for her mot in the next few weeks, fuc knows how that will workout with the new mot laws cant wait to get to some skid days in my own car, its good that i had a mates car to have a few goes in last year but will be better in my own car

rite guys abit of a update, a shitty one but still. not done alot on the car for a while but starting to work on it again to get it ready for some summer skiding,


this is the chassis leg that needed repairing:


this is my first attempt at a repair, not nice looking but plenty strong and will pass the mot no problem and should last,

like i say shitty looking but strong so im not arsed


today i decided to have a look at the rusty lower front panel, as you can see from the pics its also got damaged/folded were it caught on the ramps so i need to sort it, im not repalceing the panel for a few reasons so gotta do something with whats there:



i started by triming it down:


was harder to cut threw the fiberglass used by a previous owner lol, plan is to tack it together on the bits of good metal and then remove any last bits of rust and then maybe fill the gaps in with something and paint and under seal (its only a track car after all), any advice?

got the last small join threw the post today so can do the exhaust now

I can't see how much you've cut out from there bud. What I would do is raid the recycling for pizza boxes and cornflakes boxes, and cut out templates for each bit. If you can make it out of cardboard, you can make it out of metal.

That looks to me as though there are 2 vertical skins missing, as well as the arch sideways piece, but can't really see!

Not quite sure what's going on there mate. There seems to be a plate in place that shouldn't be there? I'm probably wrong, and it's no doubt there for strength as it's a 5 dr.

Hopefully you can see the shape you need to make? for a 3dr anyway, not sure if they differ.
You could always buy a repair sill and use a section from that.
