i wouldnt worry about letting hot air in when you 'shouldnt' - the car will just run a *tad* rich, probably not enough to make a difference..
Car stalls intermittently on motorway journeys!
i've got a car with all the bits in

Those are the sites what I found the information on - I hope it is that this bloody pipe is missing!

Well I looked for this silver cardboard like pipe... and of course it was completely missing except for a remnant near the air filter.
I took that to Halfords and got some similar ducting for £3.79.... and it seems to have done the business.
As with all old cars though, it seems to have introduced its own issues as the car seems to be running slightly rich - is this to be expected now that the air filter and carb are getting the correct flow of hot air?
Is it easy to tweak these things on an old 340?

how do you know its running rich? is it just the fuel consumption? check the choke operation is working fine and opening fully - apart from that when the engine is driving it is pretty unlikely it will run rich, and pretty hard to fix if it is

Initial throttle response is governed by your idle micture, but if it still doesn't pull with your foot to the floor, then it's something else.
