Thanks Dai!! Brought the car back from the garage last night - we both really like the ol' girl, so looking to get the work done.
Will update you on the rust situation later on - only 3 mentions on the fail form - both sides withing 30cm of body mountings of the rear, plus another mention at the rear. Will try to get a better idea from the garage.
How would I get the car to you in Anglesey??

As Mick said but keep on the A55 onto Anglesey.
Turn off the A55 at Llangefni and head towards Amlwch from there.

I can almost guarantee that the within 30 cm at the rear are the two chassis rails that go from front to rear near the petrol tank where they join three sections together. At most £300, so I'd seriously consider getting another quote. I'm afraid after reading your thread, it's a case of the garages knowing naff all, drive shaft flanges........... what muppets.
Good luck and I hope you get something sorted.

I've got a mobile mechanic friend-of-a-friend coming round to have a look on Sunday. He normally welds bin trucks, so should be strong enough!! Will update when I have information from him.

It's pretty tight in places under there for space, plus rather close to the petrol tank. Personally run it low on pertrol or completely drain the tank using the centre joining pipe, then carefully remove the filler pipe, which is plastic and runs along that chassis section, (of course assuming this is the same chassis rust problem!). As it's a 360 you'll need to invest in a couple of new jubilee clips, as the pathetic ones on there corrode away, and won't be reusable. You'll need to remove the trim panel in the boot to get the the other end behind the filler cap. It's pretty obvious once you trace it all. Cap off the tank end, either a damp rag or something suitable for safety. That should make life for the welder a million times easier! Don't forget once it's done to fill it with waxoyl or dinitrol, other wise the hard work and expense will be pointless, and freshly cut and welded metal will be vulnerable.

Good advise about the petrol tank.
Garage work down south does seem very expensive tbh.
