Re: Finally getting somewhere

Post by filthyjohn »

It's now illegal to sell plates in the 'serck' font we all have, they can only be in 'new charles wright' as seen on modern cars. Apart from that, I think they can be pressed metal or whatever. Got to be reflective though.
Black-n-silver is to signify tax exemptitude, therefore you can put them on anything registered up to nu_year's eve '72 and I've heard tales of the cops getting REALLY arsy about people bending this rule.

BTW, Dan your car looks the biz.

2 inch escort lowering blocks on the back, needed to get new bolts and alter the block a bit but wasn't to hard and didn't take to long.

For the front i just chopped the springs, was really hesitant about going the chopped route as everyone seems divided about it, the only problem i have had is there a bit noisy when you go over bumps but thats it.

Im going to get some proper front springs of classic swede but gonna do it when i can afford to get the shocks of him as well, to make life easier.

Cheers Dan.

Ok so its been awhile and not much has happen'd, but since i got Adams carb and radiator i figured id go air leak hunting before i fitted them. so i replaced the radiator which was a pretty simple job and then removed the old carb:

Then a miracle happened, something i truly never thought would happen. I removed the inlet manifold and exhaust manifold and down pipe, with no hassle  every bolt came off with minimal hassle

Heres the result:

Heres the old gasket compared to the new one:

So i gave it all a little clean and re assembled, by this time it was late, i went for a test drive and it still ran pretty bad and lumpy, which has lead me to believe that i havent tightened it all up enough, i sprayed with lynx today and it does pick up rpm so tomorrow i am going to do it all again  and use some gasket sealant to make sure there are NO LEAKS lol.

On a smaller note i also experimented with some polish and 2000 grit wet/dry paper, which is usually against all my beliefs but the results were promising and hopefully ill get some pics up for you all when i get the whole car done.

Cheers for reading Dan

While you are at it mate replace the rubber hose that joins the plastic pipe from the brake servo to the inlet manifold, these tend to perish and close up inside leading to very poor brakes; and can also cause an air leak.

Dan, its more likely you've left bits of old gasket on the mating surfaces. I'd give them all a really good clean, get some sort of blunt scraper, like a paint/wallpaper scraper in there gently to remove all the bits off, together with plenty of Carb cleaner, or white spirit/Cellulose thinners or other solvent to help dissolve off the stuff.

Ok so i had the manifold off again today and got rid of every last piece of crud there, scrubbed the whole lot and then replaced it all with a little bit of sealant between the gasket, the manifold and the block, and it didnt make a single bit of difference, the car still idles somewhere between 500 and 1500 rpm and when ever i stopped at a junction it stalled.

So i have no idea what to do next, my engine really does suck bad atm :( any advice would be greatly appreciated.
