PAS = Power Assisted Steering. (much like ABS/TCS/LSD and all them other acronyms)
My understanding so far (which is limited to RHD cars and may be wrong) is that:
a) some 360s with Volvo B19/B200 (Volvo Redblock) power units had PAS fitted. So there would be no issues fitting PAS to a car with that sort of engine.
b) Every so often a B14 Volvo (aka Renault Cleon / C-Type) powered 340 turns up that has had an aftermarket conversion usually using the same PAS rack as the 360.
c) The B17/D16 Volvo engine (aka Renault Fonte / F-Type F1N,F2N,F3N) has issues with the sump/block getting in the way of things.
Anyone care to add any comments on the above? (or indeed to if the 1.7 issue exists for LHD cars?)
Whilst it hydraulic PAS might be out of the question, it may be possible to fit something else like electric PAS, but either way it's not looking like a bolt-on venture.
In practice and considering all the above, it probably better to man-up and keep it non-PAS.

It not heavy if nothing is fooked and if you still find it's heavy then I'd suggest there's a lot of
dry steering is going on.

MP is correct, 1.4's can be converted using 360 stuff (and associated bracketry for whatever pump is chosen)
Adam (340GLT) tried fitting a 360 PAS rack to a 1.7 sumped car and it fouled. However, from memory it was in a valver with a standard set of rear engine mounts, I'd be *very* interested to see whether it fitted on a car with an uprated mounted and correctly aligned 1.7/valver etc since the rear end droop came to light.

If that's true Chris i'd still be wary of running it as it will *just* clear. With engine movement you'll still be knocking against it... I wouldn't feel comfortable running it anyway.
Raised engine mounts on the other hand...

So the conclusion is that even if it will go in, it would only clear the sump by a bawhair?
So Adam, is it actually the sump that would require cutting and shutting, or is it more serious in that the bottom of the block would be involved?

The rubber around the steering column or the rubber bit where it goes through the bulkhead?
Erm, don't know, though it was all one piece. There is no cover around the damper on the 360 if thats what you mean.

I am actually after the rubber strut mounting tops (the worse they are the better) and perhaps some other bits as well.
I was playing with the idea of going! Pm me your wish list and I'll see what I can do!
Will you be at the BKV tomorrow?
