I should probably have said all 340 saloons were 1.7's. Unless they did diesel ones in Ireland, but that'd be a rarity

Never driven one - I suspect it to be awful though - they're much slower than the 1.4 petrol. Luckily we escaped them

i have, the 340 diesel makes a hell lot of noise but nothing actually happens when you floor it

getting onto the moroway is a nightmare. it sure is economical on fuel but it almost feels like a pedalcar. swapping the 1.6 for a 1.9 helps, and i can imagine that swapping a 1.9 TDi in can make it a bit quick aswell
340 saloons got all the flavours here in holland; just like the hatches 1.4, 1.7 and 1.6 diesel. the 1.4 was available as CVT and manual, 360 saloons with B19A, B19E, B200E(and later F) and B200K

I've been in a diesel as a passenger, it's a while ago now but I remember thinking how loud the car was compared to my 343 1.4 at the time ...

Same in Germany too. But most motor journalists and many a german Volvo forum visitor is convinced that the Volvo 300 saloon was called the 360

I can't see me doing a swap if I find one, as the slowness is legendary!

1985 VOLVO 340 DL DIESEL Sedan data in automobile-catalog.com
Looks to be around 6.4 l/100km (44.4 mpg (UK Imp.)), so it's not going to win any competitions (except mibbie for slowness)

Volvo also sold a B13 petrol engine in some markets. I forget which ones ... Belgium or Finland IIRC ...

Finland.
and that fuel consumption is wrong. you can do 4l/100km without barely trying. if you want to get along with the traffic it still does 5l/100km

There is a one engine available on ebay if somebody wants to try.
The engine is powerful and smooth, says the owner.
