Hmm, I followed the instructions that the bolts came with, it was most of that, but nothing that complicated. They only went up to step 6. Might check them just to be sure. Theo, where you get that data from?

Right,

Since my last update, i started fixing rust. This hasn't gone so well. Started on the rear valance - wheel well join. ended up cutting an inch wide section out the wheel well and plating across. It started pissing doen half way through so one side's just tacked. Its temporarily covered in filler and sprayed black :/

Bit i did today was the hole in the o/s sill. I chopped out a fair size section out the outer most part, smaller section out the middle part and a 1" x "2 section out the very inner. This got shot of most of the rust. welded up the inner most bit fine. The middle layer didn't want to be welded, dunno why but the welder was having none of it. Cleaned all the metal throughly, changed wirespeed and power endlessly but I just couldn't get it right. Still, theres some metal in there held together with a spattery mess. The outer most part was the biggest fail. I cut teh sheet to fit the line I had cut along the sill, it fitted perfect. Then i got confused as to how the outermost part attached at the bottom and ended up cutting it wrong an it not quite meeting the bottom, welder still playing up, it got tacked to what was below it, the dodgy spattery patch. The wheel arch edge was a complete mess too. So its covered in a deep layer of filler and a coat of poundland matte black, which i didn't do a very good job of masking. All in all a bit of a fail.
MOT on thursday, and its meant to rain tomorrow and wednesday.
I'm gonna try and get some proper filler tomorrow and get the sill smooth and painted in the metalic blue i have that's nearly like mine.
Get the rear bumper back on and change the bulbs I've been meaning to do for ages. Reverse switch needs a bit more tape wrapped round so it stays on without having to hold the lever over, need to swap the sprung horn contacts as one of mine is snapped and put the old wheel on so i have horn button

On the upside I've fitted my TRS towstrap, got teh exhaust manifuld heat wrapped and replaced the renix vac hose and thin oil brether hose in some new stuff that's bright yellow. (looks tad crap like but the hoses were on way out)

And me dad bought a 850 GLT T5 auto, if me car fails the MOT i'll bring that to BKV

I'll get pics when my sill's not as embarrassing

Failed the MOT this morning on the sills. Getting it welded by a garage on wednesday as I'm not risking the DIY approach with BKV so close.

Dunno what the situation is as regards driving it now as the old test hasn't expired. Guessing if its faild at any point its un-road-worthy. I'll not need to drive it anyway so I'll try and get it pretty-ed up for BKV :)

Yup, if it's out of MOT now, your insurance is void. UNLESS you have it booked in at an MOT place.

Exhaust wrap looks bloody neat, good job! Pics are sweet too. Just got a normal filter thread for my block as well, that's a job for Saturday me thinks! :D

Negative. Insurance companies don't care if a car has MOT or not as long as the car is roadworthy. IE, tyres, bushes, or anything else that would cause a car to be involved in an accident. You would only get in trouble for this IF you had an accident and they could prove it was the cause of it though.

The police might have a problem with no MOT, but you've got some left. Even if you had no MOT it's an non-endorsable fine of £30. Meaning you don't even get points. But that all depends on your car being roadworthy.

VOSA on the other hand might impound a car if they feel it is dangerous. But cover any rust and the car will not be dangerous.

Long and short of it, cover any exposed rust with duct tape and you will be legal until your new MOT is done.

Ah ok, fair enough! Yeah, mine was out of MOT for a week before I booked it in, but didn't use it for fear of illegalities. Didn't know it was "ok" (I use that term VERY loosely). But so long as you have current MOT left, it's ok to use.

Yep! Essentially. Sorry to school you, it's just I get upset when people spread non-truths. It creates situations like with yourself where you were misinformed.

Before anyone goes and googles that, there are 100s of forums on the web that have this weird idea that no MOT = no insurance. I think people's weak grasp of motoring laws leads to massive speculation and paranoia. My opinion is, people watch too many of these police shows on TV.

No tax = Customs and excise will be wanting to know why and will possibly fine you. Could end up with car impounded by DVLA if on the road. Fines, impound costs but no points. Does not effect insurance.
No MOT = Police might pull you over and you might get a small fine if the copper thinks you're a dodgy chap. No points.
Unroadworthy car = MOT or not, police or VOSA will bend you over for bad tyres, sharp edges, dangerous components and other things you should have kept on top of. Loads of points possibly.
No insurance = Loads of points, fines and court. Insurance can be invalidated by an unroadworthy car if involved in an accident but not by the other two.

If your car has just failed an MOT (which is computerised) what area do you think the copper is going to check first when he pulls you (after he's been using his ANPR box)? You still have MOT indeed, but you can have a non roadworthy car 15 minutes after leaving the MOT station with a green bit of paper!

Im not so sure the reasons for failure are added to the computer system. It only says if you have an MOT or not and removes the need for a certificate, hence why you now receive and white A4 sheet and no longer need the old certificate when it comes to getting a new MOT.

Ye you can still drive your car if it fails the MOT, aslong as it has some remmaining MOT. I remmeber once a car with a snapped spring, it failed but the bloke drove it away and there was nothing we could say as it had remaining MOT, of course the car was unroadworthy.

A car can also pass its MOT but the police still deam it unroadworthy, the common one was number plates (wrong font, deteirated etc), this was changed though. I know someone who had stretched tryes, the car passed the MOT (tread was covered) but the police pulled him over and forced him to change them and wouldnt accept the MOT. They dont check exhausts for volume yet police will do you if its too loud, its a system full of inconsistencies, between authorities, MOT stations and testers within an MOT station.

Years of being the goon that acts as MOT assistant has been interesting and horrifying at times :P
