Thats coming along really well.

The only annoyance i can see is the ammount of water pipes! it looks like one massive maze!, but then i know ive grown accustom to minimal engine bays these days.

the coolant hoses couldn't be done in another way with this engine and it actually isn't that bothering to me. it's roughly the same as a std 340 coolant system with addition of a set of hoses for the turbo and a set of hoses for the intake manifold. these hoses are introduced in the original coolant circuit for the carburettor.

it could be much more messy but i'm very happy with the result so far, it looks complicated but if you take a close look its just looking good espescially if you keep in mind it's all straight hose that doesn't like bends too much because it will kink. it stays clear of any sharp edges by 5mm and isn't kinked.

the mailman desided to show up at 12:00 and with my parents leaving at 13:00 for a holiday our private machine shop is closed for the next few weeks.. so i had an hour to adapt the freshly brought oil-catch can to an oil-seperator can.

had to be converted into a hose connection:


no need of a bigger edge on the nipple to retain the hose, this isn't a pressurized connection wich made getting the correct thread to the nipple an easyer job.

just need to figur out what to do with the extra hose connection at the top of the thing. most likely i'll connect a hose to that with a plug at the end of it.

fitted, looks pretty good for now but if the time is mine i'll fabricate a new bracket!



also did the throthle cable with use of the original mounting pieces




looks messy but it needs a little slack, unfortunatly this cable is so flexible that it bends a lot allready

just started on the wiring, sorting out the new cable lengts.


while i sat down for a beer i thought this would be a very cool pic:


then finally i had the guts to take the gearbox off the car because the gear selector didn't pop back to the center, this made selecting gear almost impossible.. with a few ideas in my head about what could've gone wrong i went to it, took the gearbox off, rotated it 90 degrees, took the gearselector cover off and instantly noticed the problem, the spring has popped loose when i tested the gear selecting with the cover on but 0,5cm play on it..



though i didn't force it into gear i checked the selector system anyway for any damages or scratches, luckaly i haven't found any


so just 10mins work and the gearbox went under the car:


hooked it up to the selector and tried it, just like magic! now i finally felt how a proper brandnew gearbox shifts i like it very very much

so gearbox finally sorted, after a month of bad thoughts about what could be wrong. dawm, wish i took it off straight away!

aluminium welding on the intercoolerpipework is done! this is the connection for the fuel pressure regulator:


and these welds are to hold the clamps in place to prevent the hoses from exploding off the pipe


modified a GLT dash to the mileage of the engine:


however, to be fair it needs an extra 14km, will do that before install

all big hoses in place, few more for the fuelling and vacuum to go on the carb but that's all:

won't install that yet, need to do the electrics first..

tomorrow i hope i can finish welding on the gastank, painting it early next week.. need to do fuel hoses too but i got an idea on how to sort that so that will be done next week, other than that i need to hose up the carb and do the wiring for interior and engine loom and after that it's ready for startup!!

maybe next saturday or sunday, but don't know yet. i won't have this weekend to work on it, saturday i have to pick up a complete 340 b14 steeringaid kit and sunday a full day dedicated to the engine of the 360 GLE

fitted gastank + new hosework;



i choose not to re-spray it because i want something different with the gastank.

and did some wiring for fuel pump, differential temp sensor and gearbox temp sensor









all of them are still way overlengthed, cause i'm changing a few bits around here in the near future.. cutting on size is easyer than pulling new cable through the chassis beam

this week the rest of the wiring + hopefully rebuild of the car and startup!

started yesterdayevening with sorting out what needed to change and what the new lengts would be and after that the fun began;


but only for another hour cause it was allmost too dark to see; pretty dark spot in the shed.. so this afternoon i went to it straight away;





and it's done, only needs taping. total time spend on the loom will be aproxx 8 hours, 6 hours allready and probably 2 more for finishing the loom; all new wires, all new connectors and loads of added electronics..

plan for now: tomorrow evening i'll finish the loom; i've asked thursday and friday off.. plan is to do interior wiring thursdaymorning; first startup thursday afternoon or evening; and quick testdrive early friday morning. after quick testdrive to my work at Terberg; put it on a bridge for tire alignment and full checkup of the chassis from underneath. fridayevening finishing car to normal interior etc and making the car streetlegal again (add bumper + hood etc)

well i'm still fully pumped by adrenaline; you'll know why after this post:

the entire engine loom was wrapped and installed:

had to get some euro 98 unleaded fuel


mounted the sidepipe:


did some extra wiring on the interior


and then i finished everything in the engine bay:








after that i made interior loom ready for first startup; then came big test. hooked up battery, turned ignition on..

check fuel pump & electric fans; ok. took out the spark plugs; poored a bit of oil on the pistons and cranked it with the sparkplugs out untill oil light went off, when it got off i cranked for an extra few seconds; put the spark plugs back in and then started again. a solid roar came out of the exhaust and i went to work with the engine..

small oil leak from turbo return feed; need to solve that tomorrow, and that's about it. after running it for 10 minutes stationary in 3rd gear i put it in neutral and started applying some throttle.. engine response is very very good compared to stock b14, i was suprised straight away..

then i put the jack under the rear axle, connected the driveshafts and took it out on its first trip.. emidiatly surprised by the aggersive clutch, needs some re-adjusting cause it catches a bit high.. had to go a bit reverse, then forward; turn right; left test the brakes on a short straight and then trough the gate on the right onto the private area. i applied 1/2 throttle and turned right at the same time.. the car responded aggresively by squeeling the tires and before i knew it i was in the first drift; at 1/2 throttle...

then i did some straight accelarating in 1st and 2nd to hear the blow off valve.. what a noise; great!!

i bet i'm gonna have tons of fun with this car, i love it allready. tomorrow i'll recheck the engine in broad daylight; fix the oil leak and drive it to Terberg for front wheel alignment and checkup on the chassis and suspension. after that; putting back all the interior bits and making the car streetlegal.

Very nice build! That's one clean 300-series.

Interesting to see that different soundproofing materials were used in 300-series.. Mine had yellow foam-like stuff on the firewall.. Though I've stripped all of it because it absorbed moisture. I haven't had time to install more modern soundproofing on there yet.

after a spectacular event this morning:



that's what i call a overflowing carb .. it turned out to be a kinked return hose from the fuel pressure regulator; causing pressure from fuel pump forcing itself into carb with the pic above as result..

i let it ran and checked for leaks. no big leaks luckaly, but all the new hoses need to "set" so the clamps need to be retightend soon.
however, there was an oil leak in the sump! on the left side of the return pipe.. i took a drill, cleared the hole of powdercoating and then i did a small weld in there. unfortunatly oil was still leaking out the sump slightly so the weld didn't result 100% leakproof, however it is much better now!!

so a new sump is what i'll need. if everything turns out ok i'll get one tomorrow. monday my parents get back from holiday so machine shop will be opend by then. asap i'll finish another sump and this time i don't trust my welding and test if it's leakproof i hope i 'll be able to get it out with just removing the steering rack; saves me a BIG lot of work

i've done about 5km in the car now and even with that distance i love it. the bov does it's job excellent and is a big eyecatcher! i took it to Terberg and after a full throttle pullup in 1st during their lunchbreak all eyes were on the beast immediatly about 40 people gathered around the car, got a shitload of compliments straight away

next thing is exhaust; it sounds good but is just way too loud. i'll see if i can order a good quality damper tonight; hoping it will take the loud noise away but keep a little roar left. if i keep driving with this i'll get stopped by cops every mile..

the next week i'll be busy finishing off interior and fully dressing the car up (bumpers; hood etc); sump next, really need to get that going asap so i can send it to the powder coater guy. then the damper for the exhaust and after that the fun can begin!!

Beutiful work! I followed Fritz's project while he was running the B14; after he sold it i didn't know there was a thread about it in english. I love the detail work on the engine, super clean! I'm currently building a B14 turbo, but I'm nowhere near your level of cleanliness. Interested in selling the engine to Sweden once you've built your X-flow head engine?
