1984 360 GLS For Sale

Post by SteveP »

It comes with some regret that I'm thinking of selling my 360 due to complete lack of time since getting a new job to do the things I want to do to it when it's a second car and the fact that me owning a 300 makes me do silly things with money   I'll run through it in detail and see if there's any interest, I'm not in a huge rush to sell and it'd be nice if it went to an enthusiast!

1984 360 GLS
2.0 B19A engine with Stromberg CD175 carb (with a new diaphragm!)
5 speed gearbox
46k miles with fully stamped Service History (and I mean completely full!)
2 previous owners, the first being an elderly gent who had it from new for 24 years
Original owners pack, manual, service book, keys, keyfob, dealership plates and tax disc holder
12 Months MOT and 6 Months Tax (£112!) - it initially failed the MOT on emissions but I realised I hadn't put the air cleaner hose back on properly after fitting the diaphragm and as soon as I put that back on it passed with no advisories - HC and CO levels well within limits.

Good Points:
Very, very good original condition - a hundred times better than any of the 300's I've owned before. 2nd place 'Best 300' at the V300 National a couple of weeks ago.
No oil/water loss and diff/gearbox gaskets fine too
Never been welded - even the jacking points/sills are totally solid
Immaculate and very comfy interior
Hella spot light grille
OEM Tow Bar with twin electrics
Excellent paintwork - barely any swirl marks or scratches
14" Mk2 GLT 'Leo's' with new Khumo tyres - cost £160 a couple of months ago! With 4x centre caps (not great condition but they're all there) and 14" steel spare with new tyre
Good door and window seals/scrapers - pretty quiet cruiser
Returned 36mpg on the Peak District trip
Drives really nice with instant low down torque from tickover

Bad points - I'm being very picky here!:
Slight rust on front corners of front wings - with these repaired however I would say the car would be practically perfect. They've just been touched in for now though.
Tiny parking dent in rear passenger door
Slight laquer chip on drivers rear arch
Slight shallow dent in rear bumper
Thermostat a bit lazy, but I plan on fitting another
Small dent in chrome trim on front bumper
Stone chip on leading edge of bonnet (not broken the paint though)
Would benefit from a set of gas shocks (the originals are oil filled and I think this would improve both ride and handling) - but I am being picky!

I do have various spares/accessories that could go with the car too (if not I shall be offering these up for sale after the car has sold), probably of most interest: 6 dial Smiths cluster (Ambient Temp & Econ - very rare), Mk2 GLT rear spoiler, Front Fog lights and switch, NOS in blue box centre console gauge panel. At the moment it has a modern CD player fitted in the glovebox, which makes it pretty convenient but the original tape player is there too. Do also have a parcel shelf in the right blue with a pair of hefty 6x9 speakers in them.

Overall, it's a fantastic car which I really enjoyed driving at the Peak District V300 National but it highlighted that the thing really needs to be driven more, I would have every confidence in this car as a pretty practical daily driver. Given the condition, MOT/Tax situation and wheel/tyre combination I'd like around the £800ono mark. Car is based in Birmingham but I could possibly meet half way/deliver for petrol and a return trip home on the train depending on the distance.

Pictures (I'll post some more specific shots during the week, I appreciate these are a bit general!) - Credit goes to Chris_C and Foggy for the first two pics

It's a shame you feel the need to sell this Steve. it looks as good as spotless! IMO you could have described it as perfect lol. As you say though, you're being picky!

I love the first pic. The brightwork really makes it come alive. It looks awesome!

To anyone thinking of buying this, I own a 3dr mk2 GLS and I have to say the power delivery from these engines is great, as Steve says straight from tickover it hits you with a wave of torque.
You won't be disappointed. :D

(btw mate, put me down for the Smiths cluster if it doesn't go with the car) /threadjack.

Good luck mate, although I'm sure it won't be needed. This has to be the best example of a GLS around surely.

Hi Steve.
Why donn't you drive it as a daily. I drive my 83 GLS every day without problems.
I hope you donn't have to sell but if you do, i am shure it will go to a good home.
All the best with the sale.
Cheers Mark. sm4

He won't daily it because it has no air-con. It's yet another standard Brummie excuse for getting rid of a car in his continued search for the ultimate vehicle (which doesn't exist otherwise we'd all have one!)

So far his tally (and excuses) include.....

Black 5dr 360GLT - he broke it.
Beige Peugeot 405 - dull, slow and beige.
Skoda Favorit - slow, cheap, not 'fun' enough.
BMW 325 tds - diesel
Volvo S40 T4 - too unreliable, FWD, thirsty and not involving enough
Volvo 940 Wentworth - too barge-like and thirsty
Volvo 360GLT saloon - too slow and rusty
Maxda MX5 - too impracticle.
Volvo 340 1.4 - too slow.
Volvo S70 2.5CD - amazingly still has, but still muttering about it being FWD and uninvolving. No doubt will be for sale soon!
Volvo 360GLS - no A/C so can't daily it, too slow to have as a 'fun' car, now for sale.

If it's fast, comfortable and handles well then it's too thirsty, if it's frugal it's too slow, if it's fun but thrifty it's not practical, if it's practical it's not fun...... etc etc etc.

Haha... whilst mostly correct - I thought I'd correct a few of these

Black 5dr 360GLT - he broke it. Correct
Beige Peugeot 405 - dull, slow and beige. It was faster than the 360 GLT... but I broke that too
Skoda Favorit - slow, cheap, not 'fun' enough. - I actually had two of these... and an MPI Felicia which Michelle still has, which is surprisingly good
BMW 325 tds - diesel - I thought E36's were supposed to handle??
Volvo S40 T4 - too unreliable, FWD, thirsty and not involving enough - Not thirsty at all - but the other two are true
Volvo 940 Wentworth - too barge-like and thirsty - Again, not all that thirsty and faster than the S70
Volvo 360GLT saloon - too slow and rusty - Spot on
Maxda MX5 - too impracticle. - Sort of..
Volvo 340 1.4 - too slow. - True!
Volvo S70 2.5CD - amazingly still has, but still muttering about it being FWD and uninvolving. No doubt will be for sale soon! - I would actually miss this car if I sold it
Volvo 360GLS - no A/C so can't daily it, too slow to have as a 'fun' car, now for sale. - Too good for me to bugger about with to make fast... and too 'sensible' for a fun car

I can't say I'm really on a quest to find the ultimate car, that would of course make it easy but perhaps I get bored easily, can't see much wrong with that!

The thing is though, Steve, is that in order to have a fun car that isn't sensible you'll invariably have to modify one and that either means starting with a rough one and having to suffer the time, hassle and expense of de-rusting it (like ChrisC) or you have to start with a good one. Just lowering, improving the suspension and brakes, and adding a hotter cam and twin carbs you haven't really ruined it as it can easily be returned to standard in the future, but you have the fun factor you crave. You've modified the car in a sympathetic manner akin to what AMG do to Mercedes-Benz, or Alpina do to BMW. The car still retains a degree of originality, but is made more useable in a fun way. I agree that if the mods were akin to Adam's or use was more like Chris's then using a very tidy shell like yours would be a shame.

Jesus... Rupert talking sensible advice?!
SteveP wrote: BMW 325 tds - diesel - I thought E36's were supposed to handle??
They don't handle in the way we come to expect. If you want the involving feel of a mx-5/300 you need an E30. Thing is, they are all different, it's kinda the point, you pays your money and takes your choice.

I've been hugely lucky to drive the cars I have (lots of friends interested in cars and a drive any car policy way before I was 25) so I've never had the "I'm bored of this, I wonder if x is better" problem. I also can't find the ideal car for me, hence why I'm trying to build one. Practical load lugger that is economic, reliable AND motorsportable?! Actually, that exists, in Impreza or Evo form. Thing is, as much as I like both to drive, they only get fun at speeds that I'd loose my license and likely not walk away from if something bad ever happened.

As for the ideal starter for a project, Steve knows I'm damn tempted by this car soley as a reshell to Fake. Thing is, I just can't do it.

Steve.... you have this garage now. Why not do something stupid whilst you can afford to and don't have responibilities (I know you are saving for a deposit... but...) buy a locost/caterfield. The S70 is an amazing daily, and the caterfield would be an amazing toy.

There's no such thing as the perfect car. Anything's a compromise, really, but I've always thought 300s are a good one, particularly if you have access to a daily and are therefore spared the rust / hot summer / spare parts problems.

There can be a lot of satisfaction had in owning a car for a long time too! Buying a car, ploughing funds into it, selling at a loss, repeating the whole thing over again ... hmm ... not so good ...

Cheers
