Indicators Stay On

Just like thread title says my indicators stay on, they light up ok, but then dont flash!.

I found this useful thread here:
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... rs+stay+on
which suggest's that a relay attached to the steering column somewhere may be the offending article, i had a good look at it today but cant quite locate exactly where the relay is situated,
can anyone confirm that in a mk 3 340 the relay is under the steering column?, or and i know its a long shot but would anyone have a photograph of the relay or experienced a similar problem and fixed it, to leave a comment.

as you can see its a bit like a spaghetti junction under the dash, which is relatively easy to access, i just dont want to be messing with other electrics that may have nothing to do with the indicators!. If you see what i mean im not exactly a qualified auto - spark!

I'd really like to fix this problem myself (with the help of V3M), and i am committed to learning more about maintaining my 340, cos i love it!

Maybe the relay is in the fuse/relay box in the engine bay?

Any comment's / advice will be greatly appreciated.

yep its located at the steering column and it's one of the larger ones

if you look at the wire colors on that stalk, some of those should be in the relais feet.
best way to check if you have the correct relais is to put the indicators on, and pull them one by one (not the one with the 2 thick yellow wires though, that's the ignition relais)

I'll give that a try as soon as i can, thanks for the info.

Is getting a replacement working relay the only option?.
for example: getting the same working relay from another 340 or 360 to replace it?.
I dont want to ask too many daft questions but is it something i can take to eurocarparts or similar and get a new replacement over the counter?.

any feedback greatly appreciated, thanks!.

It's the flasher unit certainly, they are available from pretty much anywhere (autofactors or halfrauds etc).

As Anjo says, put the indicators on, pull it, and they will go out. They other test is what Foggy did, it's a mechanical part, so if you tap it the indicators will likely flash once. When buying a new one, take the old one with you.

The other option that will make you super certain is pull the relay, and get the one that has 49, 49a and 31 stamped next to each pin ;) Thats just car electronic speak for what each pin does, pins should look like this

Get the new one with those same 3 pins, and you'll be sorted

I fixed it!, the flimsy plastic mounting part of the stalk with two screws (in pic 1 & 2) in top and bottom had come loose (think this is a common prob with 300's) and the wire's must have been touching something else, cos the horn would occasionally sound for no reason, and the indicators stayed on (made for some hilarious driving!!).

but i fixed it back into place, luckily i still have all the screws and wacked a load of black gaffer tape round it to keep it in situ, and all is well again with essential electric's.

thanks everyone for the comments!
