3 door 1.7 69,000 miles on ebay
Just spotted this. I used to see this car around Doncaster until a few weeks ago. I even spoke to the owners once and gave them one of VND's V3M cards! Unfortunately now in the hands of a dealer?
I think £775 is a bit steep, however from memory, this could well be a 'no rust' car, and very nice 3 door
. At least the price will put off the banger racers! I can go and have a look at it for anyone who's interested, I'm fairly close. I'd pay £500 for it if I was after one (pending close inspection), as I think it's a good one!

I agree, given that a near immaculate GLS only sold for sub £500... a similar price for this might be good, as it's a more desirable 3 door - but then less desirable mk3... Tidy though!

Use lube?
Re: 3 door 1.7 69,000 miles on ebay
I reckon my five door Mk3 is worth £775 of anyone's money so a good three door must be worth around the same, even if it has done 43000 miles more than mine. There is an argument that higher prices for nice cars is a good thing, at least then they'll move out of the banger class and the best cars will be bought by genuine enthusiasts rather than for use as cheap runarounds until the next throwaway bargain comes along.
Just a thought...

Re: 3 door 1.7 69,000 miles on ebay
We know they are worth it, but the one of the things thats attractive to us about 300's, they shouldn't cost too much! I know my GLS was even more, but a similar escort, mini, etc etc. of the same age and condition would have been stupidly more money. It's a catch 22 situation, really good 300s cost not that much more than rough ones (compared to other 'classic' cars) so they can easily get trashed by those who want to abuse them. But people won't pay much for them, even the mint one cos they are seen cheap older cars and have traditionally been seen as cheap because of the Grandad image form the 80's/90's.
One day the mixture of popularity / rarity / image may combine to create much high prices for the best cars. I can't see it happening yet as they do keep turning up, but as they are being scrapped faster than they are being made
, rarity value must go up.

Re: 3 door 1.7 69,000 miles on ebay
I seem to be saying this a lot recently (probably coz I'm trying to buy one) but value is determined by the fella parting with the money. Not us. And not even the seller. I could say my house is worth a million, and never sell it. Doesn't make it true.
Market decides.
It's a beautiful looking car, there's absolutely no doubting that.
I'd love to keep it, but the ask is too high for me.

I agree, anything is worth only what someone is prepared to pay but I'm personally glad that the asking price for really nice cars does seem to be creeping up. When I bought mine I wanted the best condition I could find (regardless of spec) and set myself a limit of £800. The seller started off wanting £1200 and eventually accepted £750 - he knew he wouldn't get more and I knew it would take a long time to find one anywhere near as good so we did the deal. More than a year and 8000 miles on the car has proved to be worth every penny.volvosneverdie wrote:I seem to be saying this a lot recently (probably coz I'm trying to buy one) but value is determined by the fella parting with the money. Don't even mention houses - mine has just been valued at £10k less than I paid for it in 2005. So much for investment..

If you dont HAVE to sell, youll be a winner eventually. Property always goes up in the long term. Its just the desperate who usually lose out.Ian Mac wrote: Don't even mention houses - mine has just been valued at £10k less than I paid for it in 2005. So much for investment..
I lost over 10k (early buy out fees included) on a flat in a block (seemed a good idea at the time) when the service charge west from £269p.a. to £1500p.a in one year.
Which meant I had to bin it in a hurry as I couldnt afford to live in it.
Live and learn.
Re: 3 door 1.7 69,000 miles on ebay
It annoys me that people don't recognise it as a classic at all, yet same age 240s are. It doesn't even have a section for it in the valuation page of Practical Classics, yet they seem to mention mk1s now and again in picture articles. Baffles me but I think the reason must be that it falls in the crack between the DAF enthusiasts and the Volvo enthusiasts. It really is a niche car.

Also just noticed it has a very short mot and no tax.
So stick another £150 odd on the price.

That doesn't annoy me as much as Volvo snobs who ignore 300s and 400s like a ginger stepchild.Speedy88 wrote:It annoys me that people don't recognise it as a classic at all, yet same age 240s are.

Well... 400s do kind of suck
480 is a cool shape but I'd have to strip it down and rebuild it with new electrics if I was to have one. And make it an AWD monster
