i have a few questions about the gearboxs,

are there any uprated mounts etc floating about over here on over in sweeed land?
what are peoples prefered box? the 4 speed or 5 speed?

the car will be used to drift but will also be used as a daily and i do a few drives down to bournemouth from london (a few meaning every other weekend)

also will the 4 speed diff on the 5 speed box help in any way??

You WILL need the 5 speed box for motorways or you will slowly go insane. And for that too you'll need the 1.7 diff. The 1.4 diff will give you more acceleration but you'll again go mad on the motorway while your engine screams at you and you get 10mpg. You shouldn't need a 1.4 diff to drift well with the engine you've got. I've actually been looking around for a GLT diff for even lower gearing for motorway commuting. I loose some acceleration but I'm confident the engine can make up for it with some well timed gear changes.

O really? Its the opposite way to what I thought then, I thought the 4 speed would of had longer rations due to being less of them.

What 360 gearboxs can you use then??

I kinda agree, definitely go for the 5 speed box... if you have a 1.4 stick with the 1.4 5 speed box too with the 3.82 ratio, the engine doesn't rev that high at motorway speeds and it gives good acceleration too. Although I'm not sure what engine you have, is it a valver? If so the 1.7 3.64 diff ratio should be good.

Speedy - a GLT diff has the same ratio as you have currently, I'm guessing you meant a GLE diff which is a 3.36 from memory.

The ratios in the 4 speed box are the same, only the final drive ratio differs

huh really? I've already got a GLE and it's got a 3.64. But yeah I mean the higher geared one. I'm hoping it will give me just over 2k at 70mph which I think the mpg on chris's fuel map will shoot right up. Aiming for 45mpg :D

ok so use the 5 speed box

and use the 1.4 dif? or are there 2 types of 1.4 dif with different ratios in?

no, use the 1.7 diff. You will regret the 1.4 diff on the motorway.

You've a 340 GLE. That will have a 3.64. Steve means a 360GLE, which has a 3.36.

SJ, try the 1.4 diff (all but very early 1.4's are 3.82) if you feel it's too high, then you can change it. No point in making work for yourself until you know what it's about. I used to use a 1.4 for lots of motorway stuff.

4sp and 5sp boxes have the same ratios, 5th just has an extra one. It really is just a 4sp box with another gear bolted onto the end, hence why the gear stick pattern is

R--1--3--5
----2--4---

rather than

1--3--5
2--4--R

Sorry, yeah I should've specified - 360GLE diff!

All 5 speeds are 3.82 anyway, 4 speed 1.4's have two ratios IIRC - earlier (upto around 1982) cars had I think a 3.91? and after then 4 speeds got a 3.64

here's a list of all diff ratio's:

4 speed (M45R) and 5 speed (M47R) diff's are NOT interchangeable!

Something I'm never sure on with that list Anjo, we had 4spd 1.4's over here till.... '88 ish? Certainly later than the list shows at least.

all info is from Volvo documentation so the ratio's are right. but you were right about something being wrong, i've made 2 typo's in that list  guess something went wrong then from translating dutch > english.. corrected it now.
