Hey guys,

I'm having a problem with my B14 340. The car will not for the life of me start first time. Regardless of choke settings or throttle position.

After a few tries, it starts and run perfectly though.

The other potential symptom is when I turn the engine off: there is a definate amount of run, but for no more than a second.

At first I thought it was my fuel pump, because when I started the car, there was no fuel visible in the filter: the carb was getting nothing. Is this normal? Is the pump supposed to pump fuel immediately?

I've replaced the fuel lines in the engine bay, and check over the pump the best I could: it's a sealed unit. It looked fine, but is definately not the originally fitted one.

Do any of you guys have any suggestions?

good job on replacing the engine bay hoses, did you do all three of them (feed and return to the pump, and from pump to carb)?
under the carpet in the boot there's a round cover, if you unscrew it there's the fuelfloater with the feed and return hose; those 2 are notorious to perish aswell and that can cause these problems

also worth it to unscrew the TDC sensor and clean it while you're busy.

I did indeed. I also put a new filter in incase the other one had got jammed with crap.

I did open up that little back plate and had a check of the hoses. They seemed fine, but then again, so did the ones in the engine bay. Is there any easy way to replace them without the little plastic inserts falling away? Looks like a tricky little job.

Is this the sensor that the renix uses for timing? I thought it may be this, but wasn't sure where to find it. I'll have a dig about and see. I wondered if it could be anything on the renix itself, corroded points, that kind of thing. Maybe my renix needs some attention?

The sensor is located on the passenger side, if right hand drive, on top of the bellhousing held in with 2 bolts. The tip should be clean and shiney, if not then it is covered in clutch dust and needs cleaning.
