relay buzzing

Just had the car cut out, with the relay under the dash buzzing. It's the one on the passanger side of the steering coloum with two heavy yellow wires going into it. What does this relay do and any ideas why it's buzzing other than just bad contact, I've tried swapping the relay no differance.
Any ideas?

Thanks

That is the ignition switch relay. If it's buzzing then it's possible that it is an earth fault or power is getting put back through an earth wire. If you look at the contacts on the relay and test which are live and which are earth you should be able to find out if it's just the relay at fault. Relays have different outputs so just changing it with any type of other relay may give the same results.
Check for this power sequence with ignition off and on:

30 live (all the time) Yellow Wire
85 live (only with ignition on) maybe White/Green
86 earth (all the time) don't know colour, possibly Black
87 (not live with ignition off but will become live with ignition on). Yellow Wire

This sounds more like an earth fault at terminal 86, or power may be getting through on this wire back up to the relay.

Good Luck with it!
