Help with clutches

Post by Lowandslow »

Hi guys,

While since I've been on here but I need help,

Clutch is slipping like a good'un at the moment, drives ok but if you try to accelerate on the motorway the second you open it up it slips away so I've been nursing it around lately.

I just need to know what clutch to get, I've looked on ebay and the 1.7 has two stated, one that just states volvo 340 1.7 and one that states volvo 340 1.7 b172, I have no clue what the difference is.

My car is a 1.7 GL 1987 and reg D340 XFE, if someone can help me out so I don't buy the wrong one and end up stuck with my car in bits, or having to re-fit the knackered clutch.

Thanks in advance :D

They are the same. The B172 bit is the engine code. The other clutch without the "B172" number will be exactly the same as the one with it. So, buy which ever one is cheaper.

Not always true... loads of the ebay one's listed will not fit your car.

You cannot fit one that also states it fits a 440 (in very general terms) they have a 24 spline thingy to fit the output shaft. You need the one that fits a 20 spline output shaft (which are generally a bit dearer on the buy it nows :( )

EDIT: If anyone ever finds a 24 tooth output shaft to prove me wrong I'll happily give you a fair set of pennies for it ;) I've broken a few cars the parts catalogues say should have them but never found one (note never the green books mentioning it... if that doesn't say something...)

FWIW, I bought 6 brand new clutch kits a few months ago as I was trying to find out variation on clutch release bearings... I can be persuaded to loose one ;)

If they fit can I persuade you by saying "please please please... and how much?"

Ah farynuff! I managed to get one off "jolly good car spares" on ebay, for £20. Fitted fine.

Its good to know the variation in pattern. I've found that with a few things, the parts arnet always as they seem!

I've also heard this off a volvo dedicated scrapyard but I'm inclined not to believe him either. Seeing as it's never ever ever come up in a help topic.

I'm pretty certain it doesn't exist. Me and Dai have been looking for 5+ years now ;) Somehow it ended up in a parts book and became folklore from then on

Cheers Chris_C, as long as it fits and works I'm happy, nothing worse than getting it all apart and then finding out it doesn't, especially when you're doing it at night before work the next day

I'm just attempting this now and I'd like to thank Volvo for putting some bolts for the starter in the worst place possible. I miss my ford :(
