ok ive had my mechanic do some work to get my 340 1.4 cvt ready for its test as its been stood for ages.....he tells me its good to go....

mot bloke failed it reason he gave was poor running? ... he reckons its missing on tickover as the engine has a lil shake to it...... i explained to him that the head had recently been re-built and that i know for a fact that its not missing........he stood his ground insisting that the engine shouldnt have any shake to it during idle

my mechanic says hes full of s**t

so my question is how much engine shake/vibration is normal?... i thought these old volvos all had a bit of engine shake and its just how they run?

cheers

B14s can and do shake the carb loose. Id say a bit of shake was a trait dude.

if he checked the CO with the probe in the exhaust, and checked if the engine mounts were ok there's no reason for him to fail it.

B14's are definatly allowed to shake a little bit at idle; at 1100rpm it should lay solid and isn't allowed to shake or anything.
here's my rebuild B14 before setting up the carb's idle mixture; this is about the max shake that is allowed (no vacuum leaks or really poor carb)

and here it is after setting the idle mixture

if it shakes more than the first vid, check the intake manifold/hoses and carb base for vacuum leaks, see if the idle solenoid is working and check the floater height
