i know that its possible to convert the stock b14 engine to turbo with einough hard work but i was just wondering......

has anyone ever converted a 340 with a cvt to a turbo???? .... cant help thinking it would be a lot of fun to drive.

or is there maybe some reason it cant be done??...... maybe the cvt cant handle the extra power?

cvt can handle quite a bit of power! it's massive torque that's the problem.
in a V300 it may work on a low pressure (2 or 3psi) setup, in a Daf 55/66 wich is quite a bit lighter it will rip a new set of CVT belts to pieces in less then 6000miles at only 8psi.

thé engine for a CVT V300/Daf is a 1100cc Gordini engine, 120bhp @ 8000rpm or something similar. crossflow head, twin carbs, racing manifold, balanced crank etc.
what would work is mating a 1.6 16v renault lump to a B14 bellhousing with custom engine mounts etc. that engine has only slightly higher low end torque than the B14 so will keep the cvt intact, but above 4000rpm much better response and power

so converting my b14 to turbo would be counter productive if i kept the cvt?

lol maybe i should buy one of those rediculous electric superchargers of ebay lol...... they reckon they give 2 psi....... ill beleive it when i see it

what if i dropped a renault 5 gtt in it?

could the cvt handle that?

Is it just the belts that are the problem? Would it be possible to fit some stronger belts if that is the case??

kevlar reinforced belts will last not much longer than OEM spec belts. it's too much stress for the design really
going 5GTT route with its original T2 the engine has a lotta low end torque, i bet the clutch is going to slip there if you nail it

i want to get a little more power ... not too much maybe just bring it to 100 bhp but i realy want to keep the cvt....

turbo CVT would be really fun to drive.. is there a more modern or tough CVT transmission that can be fitted??

its looking like every mechanic i talk to about this is telling me that they wouldnt recommend dropping a more powerful engine in my 340 or even do a turbo conversion as they all seem to say the same thing ( they have no idea if the cvt can handle the extra power)

so my new question is...... when these cars were first rolled out was the cvt available with the 1.7 or 2 litre versions????

because if they were then this would indicate that the cvt can handle a tiny bit more power and the most simple way for me to get a bit more bhp would be to drop in a 1.7/2.0 from a donor 340/360???

No they weren't B14 was the only CVT version.

surely theres a slightly bigger engine i can drop in that the cvt can cope with :S

MG TF's have a CVT indeed, but have no idea about it, a friend has one though so could probably find out.

Spike, your safest option would be to start with a 1.7 from a 300, but if it's not been done before you have to be prepared Frits ran his CVT with a R5GTT for a bit, check his thread for details.
