door rust

Post by brad360 »

Somewhere I read that rust just below the door windows is common.

I had a few blistered paint spots on mine. I was sorry to find when I sanded them back that there were small holes right through the steel, largest about 8mm diameter. It looks like it has rusted from the inside out. I pushed edges of the holes in a bit and filled them with some bogand sanded back.

I removed the door trim to see what could be seen from inside, but thetop part is inaccessible. One thing I noticed is condensation insidethe door, maybe it needs more ventilation inside the door. When I bought my 360 in feb it was damp inside and under the back seat andaround the spare wheel were bits of mouldy dog food and what looked like potting mix.

It also had a BIG leak through the hatch door. I plugged up the bottom corners of the glass, beneath the spoiler, that has stopped the leak.

Only the driver's door does not have any trace of these rust spots. I wonder if being opened and closed often assists keeping the inside of the door dry?

I'm going to make a point of opening the windows when it is parked in the sun to try and dry things out as much as possible, I think interior moisture is the culprit.

I think this door rust problem was mentioned in "worst features" or something like that.

I don't find the search facility on this forum very helpful, if gives too many results.
The only other rust I can find is the steel platform the battery sitson, and some on the nearby body. I brushed it back, put on some rusteating liquid, painted it with zinc primer. I sat the battery on 4wooden skewers, so there is a slight gap between the battery and theplatform it sits on, so moisture can get out.

hi there

i think james knows the cause of this - i cant remember off the top of my head what it is, but all my older cars (pre-86) have suffered from it.. my current has some flakes there so i'm just going to leave them there till they turn into holes :)
