Hi guys,

does anyone have a part number for the thermostat for a B172 engined 340? All of my local motor factors (4 different companies) computer systems keep coming up with the same one as is used in the B14, which is completely different to the one in my B172.

Cheers,
Mark

According to the 1985-1991 parts manual the thermostat is P/N 3344615-4.
Hope it helps you.

Are you sure RJ? That's the part number I have on VADIS of the gasket

3345628 (old part number 3344617) is listed as "Thermostat Kit" - and I assume the kit is thermostat + gasket.

Cross referencing with facet.it

Image

7.8533 is 88C kit (includes gasket) - compares with VOLVO 3344617, 3345628
7.9556 is the gasket only - compares with RENAULT 77 00 718 380 / VOLVO 1397911, 3287755, 3344615, 6842214, 6842214-6
7.8202S is the 88C thermostat only

Seems a common enough thermostat and if needed available in a number of temps from 74C to 92C

I just double checked.

Vadis is always a later version than the book is, but I still prefer the book.

So when I enter my reg number on Euro Car Parts I get given this for a thermostat...

It doesn't look right to me and from this post seen that a lot of suppliers think it's the same for the 1.4 as the 1.7 (or is it?). So I put in the details for a 1989 Renault 5 1.7 (with the F1N/F2N engine pretty similar to the B172)...
Screen Shot 2017-02-19 at 09.10.24.jpg
1. Diameter 53.5mm. Opening temp 88 oC - F3N/F2N engines listed
2. Dia 54mm. Opening temp 88/89 oC - F3N/F2N listed
3. Dia not given. Opening temp 89 oC - F2N 742 engine listed

Question 1: Will these fit my Volvo?
Questions 2: Would there be any advantage to fitting one with a lower opening temp?

Currently my car is getting hot (a couple of mm past the centre on the engine temp gauge - used to sit in the middle for ages) when left standing or stopped in traffic. No issues on the open road. Hoping it's just an old thermostat not opening properly but if it's because the radiator and cooling system have become less efficient over the years, could a thermostat with lower opening temp help slightly? Engine only has 50k miles on it and no sign of sludge so hoping that discounts the head gasket. Also no sign of coolant leaks or rust in the radiator. It's due a coolant change so will be able to make sure it's bled for any air that's got into the system but that would be worrying if it's got there when the system hasn't been opened up for repair.
