An unused Unipart-refurbished pre-1982 non-PAS steering rack for earlier 343/345 models (i.e. no T-bar) that I bought in error about a decade ago is on offer since I have just found that it deffo won't fit my 1988 version. If you would like it, its yours for the postage.... but don't all rush ;-)

Hi, i might be interested in that for my 1980 car. What do you mean by T bar? (is it the joint to the vibration damper?)

Where the rod from the steering wheel connects to the rack, there is a flexible coupling made of two T-shaped brackets bolted onto a circular rubber disk. With the late models, the T-bracket is part of the rack but with the earlier ones it is not i.e. the rack for early cars just has a splined knob sticking out of it rather than a rod with a T-shaped bit at the end. I think that's right.

I thought there were just two types (long rod then T and short rod then T), I need to look closer!

Tis indeed interesting, as I have a 1980 rack (I'm pretty certain, I'm sure it was from Foggy's W plated 343) on Fake. Must be a super early change?

The rack I have from Foggy did have a couple of differences, but they weren't in fitment. Where's RJ when you need him!

I think the "t-bar" was detachable (via the splines) on the earlier ones...maybe? Definitely a Q for RJ!

cheers

James

This thread might be a good time to try to clarify the steering variants.

AFAIK

B14 variant A. up to chassis 593524 (mid 1980), rack has a splined pinion shaft and needs adapter to bolt to flexible disc,
rack end has FEMALE thread, TR end secured by starlock washer.

B14 variant B. from chassis 593525, rack has 'T' pinion shaft that bolts direct to flexible disc,
rack end has MALE thread, TR end has rubber stop collar and is locked by deforming flange.

D16, B172, B19, B200 - as B14 variant B.

PAS racks have a splined pinion shaft to which a UJ fits (no flexible disc), rack end has FEMALE thread.

All B14s are 4.13 turns L to L, all others are 4.4.

Mac.

Hello, the Unipart number is GSR 647 E and there's another number (14973) which doesn't look important. Perhaps someone can check if its the right part..... I think that's about all I can do at this end..... it looks just like the early 340 splined-pinion racks on the fleabay..... Anyone still hinterested??
