Right guys.

issues with a snapped B200E cam belt.

What is likely to of happened to valve's? was idling when snapped. attempted re start too.
would cylinder head be damaged?
piston tops?

replacing the head and valve train

will head and block NEED to be re-skimmed?
what complications may i face?
head etc is from a B200EA (egr)
snapped belt is a B200E
is there anything i should do while heads off?

Hey Logan,the B200e is not an interference engine unless you are running a really lumpy cam,yours is probably an A cam.May be at full throttle there may be some collision but you were just ticking over.

As you know I have recently been rebuilding my B200e and just for my peace of mind I removed the cam belt and fully opened each valve and manually turned over the engine..............no collision.

I also re fitted the cambelt in the wrong position deliberately and gave it a manual crank to simulate a jumping or slipping belt,again no problem.

Fit another belt and do a compression test.

Skimming would only be needed if you have cooked the engine

If you really want to remove the head then you should remove the valves and give it a de-coke.

You could get the head skimmed to increase compression but you would then need to keep an eye on that cam belt and never let it break.

Personally I find it quite rewarding to scrape out all the carbon buildup and lapping in really shiny valves into a sparkly cylinder head.The B200 IMO is a real delight to work on.

back story. a few months ago maybe a year a guy with a beautiful maroon 360 brought some parts off me he lives ten minutes away. I told him if ever he wants to sell it let me know. and last night i it a call at 9 pm asking if i wanted to buy a car with a suspected snapped belt. so i went and had a look today. not a spot of rust on the old girl. but indeed a snapped belt. I plan on buying it and fixing it, as it only needs the steering column bush for a wof.

So Steve you have also cost me money but saved me some just kidding i was gonna buy it regardless.

If you are clever you can check the compression and any unusual noises by removing the rocker cover and checking each cylinder by hand.

ie you turn the cam by hand and remove all the spark plugs.If you have a catastrophic failure you should be able to tell with a finger over the plug holes.

May do that. all this talk of cam's on here lately and over on volvoforums makes me curious bum what cam's I've got.

Just pop a new belt on and start it. I would also consider checking the compression to be certain all is good with the engine.
I always use volvo belts as they are no more expensive than a aftermarket one
