dash lights..

just a quickie - i replaced the bulb for 'lights on' on me dash, and its now working for the first time ever! thing is - it comes on with even side lights on - i thought it was for dipped beam only? or am i wrong??

oh and another thing - my handbreak light doesnt work - where should i look for likely broken stuff?

The wire is often broken (see the red arrow...)

Concerning the lights, it's normal... A little detail is interesting: the bulb behind the switch for the lights works CONTINUOUSLY on my 1987 GLi, it's not the case with the 1984 models...

thanks for the info - i'll have a look.

i dont *think* that light is always on in my '86, but i'll check tonight. i wouldnt be surprised if it never comes on - the cars not been best looked after and i think little details like that might have been oft overlooked.

Because the light works all the time, the bulb is frequently broken...

thanks for the help mate - i've got the light working (was that exactly that had happened). i've got to get the hazard light working (pretty sure thats a bulb as the indicators light up), and the rear heated window (which i think is cos i disconnected the strut, which i did so that the boot light would go off, i think i'll just take the bulb out...)

The headlight switch is always on with the ignition - so you can find it in the dark!

If your boot light refuses to go out, its most likely a problem with the switch - have you tried operating the switch manually? Mine did this for ages, and it was due to a buckled strut mounting (long story!)

It's attached to the drivers side strut. There's a sliding collar on it which is moved by the 'body' of the strut when it closes.

When I put new struts on mine I had to add an extra bit of collar (from a pen) as the struts had different sizes of gas chamber. Stumpt me for a bit!!!

Yeah, especially if you're using non-genuine struts with an original switch or visa-versa. I have a spare switch here I can drop in the post if you want Hugh?
