1.4, 340 DL, 1984 - Gearbox Input Shaft

I recently inherited a 340 DL from 1984, which has not been used for >15 years (i am loving it!). The catch is that the car needed a new proptube and the two shafts at two ends. So i got it all (the proptube was hard to find!) but now I have an issue with the input shaft that connects the proptube to the gearbox (picture below). Basically they guy from whom I bought the shaft got it from the gearbox of a later model 340 (i think a 1990) but the end that goes into the gearbox does not fit (sigh!) ... From what i have heard so far it turns out that somewhere around 1984 they changed some parts within the gearbox and that might have caused the problem? So I have a few questions if you guys don't mind:

1- Is it true that the gearbox for all 340 models is the same? In other words if i buy the entire gearbox from a say 1.4 1990 Volvo 340 would it fit my 1984 model?

2- Is there a way not to buy the whole gearbox? I would gladly buy a shaft (at top price!! ;) ) if i know that it will for sure fit my gearbox or is it possible to change the end that goes into the gearbox on the shaft that i currently have?

I appreciate y'all guiding me through this.

-M

When you do get it back together make sure all the support bushes are good. Its when these are loose/torn/damaged that they cause the misalignment under power that causes the prop to be damaged.

But yes generally all similar spec gearboxes can be swapped, ie any 5 speed 340 box will fit, they should have the same parts IMO. 360s are slightly different as the driveshaft is different.
