CVT whine....can I do anything to dull it a bit?

Hi.
I have a 1986 340 CVT auto. I know they tend to make a bit of a whiney noise, but this one seems to make it louder than any of the previous three I have owned and much more so than my Daf 66. It's had new belts within the last 10k and they are (supposedly, I have not checked yet) genuine Volvo ones a which I have heard are made of harder rubber than the cheaper non branded belts therefore creating more of a whine.
Anyway, I just wondered if there was anything I can do to try and decrease the whine a bit as I live in the back of beyond, yet my neighbours miles up the road can hear me coming. (Not good when you're trying to come home without being noticed)
My clutch and overdrive vacuum is spot on so it's not a case of too low a ratio, so any help would be gratefully appreciated.
