Hi there,

I am about to do a 'minor' tune up on my 1990 1.4 340 variomatic.
I don't yet have a haynes manual as I live in the Netherlands but dont speak much Dutch so I need to get one shipped from thUK, but in the meantime I would love some service information.

1) What are the timing settings (which is no.1 plug, is it vaccum/no vacuum & where are the timing marks)?
2) What should the idle speed be?
3) Are there any checks/adjustments for the variomatic gearbox - mine 'knocks' when stopping but not when slowing down

Hope you can help,

thanks - Mike

Hi and welcome to the Forum

There is no way to adjust the timing on this engine but if you want you can check it with a strobe. The timing marks are on the flywheel ( there is a viewing window). Idle setting is 6 +/- 2 degrees BTDC. This is vacumm off and plugged

Idle speed for the auto is 800 +/- 50 rpm

Regarding the CVT, a minor service would be to make sure the belts are in good condition and to check the gap between the pulleys is correct ( feeler between rear pulley halves on both sides - should be 1.5mm minimum up to 2mm.
Check all the hoses etc are in good condition and if you don`t know when it was last done, change the gearbox oil. (both gearcases, uses about 3l of 80W/90 hypoid gear oil - NOT ATF...)
