Knock when drive engages.

I have a knock every time I engage the clutch, it is bugging the hell out of me and hard to tell where it is coming from although I supect the diff after laying on the ground under the car while the missus popped the clutch a few times.
Anyone shed any light on this? Halfshafts seem ok, I rebuilt them just a while ago and there was minimum play.
She drives fine once drive is going to the wheels, this just happens when I'm pulling away or changing gear. I do have a gearbox mount where the bush seperated from the housing, is it likely this? If so, any solution?

Yes the gearbox mount would be my first suggestion, the engine and gearbox are pushing against this to drive the car forward.

No standard solution as yet, everything is NLA, some have made custom brackets with other bushes.

Driveshaft splines, Driveshaft splines, Driveshaft splines, Driveshaft splines, Driveshaft splines, Driveshaft splines.... 1000% definite. It'll suddenly give up when you go over a bump and you'll have no traction.

Do you mean the splines on the quill in the torque tube? They were fine when I rebuilt it. Or do you mean the ones in the half shafts? They were also in good condition when I rebuilt them.

I had the same symptoms as you when a half-shaft spline went. I don't know, but I would guess that if the splines on the shaft are fine, then whatever it slots into might be knackered?? Others on here will know more.

Did you by any chance not replace the clamp bolts or not use a torque wrench on them after the rebuild? These are very critical bolts and strip just by looking at them.

Hello, I am interested to know which clamp you mean here. Cheers, bog.

The clamp on the spinny-pole inside the torque tube.

The clamp was torqued correctly. The noise is coming from the drivers rear, I'm starting to think it may be the anti tramp bar that I modified. Tonight I ordered standard springs and shocks for the car as the lowering does not suit the roads I drive on. She is going back to standard. I may have a look tomorrow if I can isolate the noise but it is difficult to be under the car while having drive engaged. I tried it with the rear wheels on ramps and the wife dropping the clutch but it is not ideal. (And bloody scary to boot)

Might try it tomorrow on axle stands. At least that way I can see the anti tramp bar, just won't have as much load on the axle.

You need to stop blaming the car then!
