I am after a set of these clocks/dials (well really the surround/binnacle only), working condition not important. Don't care about speedo/clock variation just the layout has to match.

These are not the gauges you are looking for... You can buy replicas from German eBay (someone probably has a link) you don't have to ruin increasingly rare parts for star wars props, hope this helps.

On a serious note are they "really" rare?

I would make replicas myself and then the part would be usable for a car still. The people that make replicas only sell complete sets and the shipping/customs charges are crippling!

Well they are in a way. The Volvo 300 series range went through annual updates over it's long production run. Those dash panels were used only between Model Year 1979 and MY1982. During that period there was also another variation of dash used too.

We're now in 2015, so the last cars (of those that are left, which isn't many) with these panels are now over 32 years-old. It's hard work finding parts for a 32 year-old car.

A quick back-of-the-envelope tot up of 79-82 cars left in the UK & IRL comes to about 95. As for the rest of Europe, couldn't say. Take off the ones that have the alternative dash. Add on the ones that are knocking around as spares. Consider the "not from my cold dead hands" factor and the like and you might be better off buying a lotto ticket!

But don't lose heart. Decent 3D scanners will tumble in price and so will 3D printing.
