RUST

We have all got this problem to a degree. The 340 is due a respray soon but I have noticed some rust so I have tackled it now before it gets worse!

Well you can see what I am getting at. my first step is to get out the wire brush on the drill and clean the rust off

This patch above has come up nicely (the hole is for the switch) above
But this patch below is just too rusty

A quick coat of paint over the lot (welding to be done the following night)

The welding done it looks a bit poo because I used a series of tacks to build up the holes

Then it time to face the weld off with an angle grinder. Be carfull to ues dust sheets or something to sheild to glass and interior. Hot sparks WILL burn into glass!!!

Then some paint again

The same goes for this small rust spot on the door

Wire bush untill all signs of rust have gone

Then paint I use a very (expensive) heavy alu content primer

Well lecture over.

Very nice photos, I have done repairs to that place shown at first pic, my car was not that bad so it was rather easy to do.

Passenger door is however really a problem, there is huge hole at bottom of door, also surface that faces outside from car is getting really ugly. I think that I need to do some welding there, but as I have no place and no equipments it have to wait bit further.

Hmmm, well timed... Kar needs a looking at on that rear door seam... Now just to learn to weld..... Are the tops of them sills structural? I really need to learn what can and can't be done in that area.

You got the interior lights on them switches? I'm looking at using some Mk2 (probably) mondeo rear locks when I get round to sorting that out... but other things first

MOT wise the sill are structural and need to be welded. I also recomend caution well alowing mot type repair's to do welding. most of them are chuffed it their weld does'nt fall off! Your best bet is to get someone who does classics to cut out the rusty patch and weld in some new metal.
If you don't cut out the rust it will return in little time. Once you have finnished the welding and painting give it a good wax oil.

The interior lights are on the switches, they have gone vety rusty so I am going to repace them with some spare ones off the front I have. The rear switches seem to trap water and rust where as the fronts don't.

Could you give some more info on that sweet-ass paint please Dai? I currently use a zinc primer, which is better that most of the stuff you can get from motor factors, but it's still not that great.

Ok at the mo I'm using Sigma 2pack primer (kindly donated by my first place of work)
I originaly started with I single pack (does not need mixing) this is going to be the best one for most of you to use.

It is

Miogard protective paint
green/grey
primer transport
7244/5ltr
Tel 01332 295959

It is a lot of money at about £100 a tin but well worth it.

They are on your door step.
When I asked a year or so ago they only did the 5 ltr tin. But as you would collect maybe they would let you have a ltr.
Let me know how you get on and what it costs now.
