Always been a volvo owner/fan but up to now always been 240's and 740's.

Saw this in and had to stick a bid on. Bought completely blind so who knows what will turn up!

Plans are to change the tyres, all fluids inc diff and gearbox, distributer cap/rotar arm/points. Then see what happens!

Found this forum while doing a bit of research, seems a wealth of information......

Amazing condition, I would keep the wheels and tyres (but not use them on the road!) and get some more shot blasted, sprayed up with new tyres on. If you intend to use it much the paint on those those wheels soon lets rust in! I did that with my 360 which was in similar condition and year but at 17,000 miles. It seamed a shame to loose the originality of still having them as they were the original Goodyear tyres Volvo fitted, although not safe at more than 30mph! I did use them for a while but never felt safe after a near miss in the wet when the back end went out at relatively slow speed. The rubber had gone hard and the tyre profile was concave due to deformation rather than tread-wear.

Hi Andy.
Must keep that in mind mate as my spare wheel is 34
years old and has never been on the road.
Cheers Mark.

I was also discussing this car with Chris_C who noticed the plate basically spelt out 'RUSTY'.... ironic really as it looks immaculate :D

I recently changed the wheels on my gold GLS back to the ones that came on it. A few years ago I'd put on some alloys I bought from Theo in Cornwall about 7 years ago. I knew they were old even then, but as two were down to 2mm in tread and one kept going flat I decided to change them the other week. I was also concerned about their age. On closer inspection I found that one was from 2001 (Pirelli), two Michelins from 1996 and oldest another Pirelli from week 36 1993, this had developed a fault resulting in the tread wearing unevenly. There was no balance problem however and if I hadn't checked them visually I wouldn't have known. I don't think it would have lasted much longer or for very long at prolonged speeds of over 50mph. At the V3M A5 drive to Wales a few weeks ago I was risking it a bit, as I said to James at the time!

So yes, be very careful with old tyres. It's amazing how the have lasted and is tribute to those brands, but I have generally kept to no more than 60mph. Needless to say, all four are coming off the rims as soon as I can get to the tyre fitters.

Car landed this morning.

The transport company that lifted it is 40 miles away from my house so it was a bit of a risk driving a car that as far as I knew had not been on the road since '82, and that I had never seen!!

Bad start, turned the key and nothing. Got a booster pack on a and saw that someone had left the interior light on. Fired straight up into a nice smooth idle...so far so good.

Turned out I had nothing to worry about, it drove absolutely perfectly to my mechanics who performed a quick service. Condition wise it is pretty much as new. Small car park dent on the drivers door which I'll get taken out and thats about it. All dash lights, fans, heater, dials etc etc work perfectly.

Never been in a 340 before but was very pleased to see the same dials as my dads old 245dl.

Plans this week will be to get the steel wheels dipped and coated, and new tyres. Then change all the other fluids and electrical components and see what happens after that!

Hi mate.
Looks brilliant. You need a set of proper floor mats to preserve the carpet.
I have a spare set if you want them.
Cheers Mark.

Original 5 wheels dipped/powdercoated/painted and new b f goodrich tyres.

Next for the major service, put about 400 miles on it to see if there is any bugs but it really is running sweet as a nut.
