300 Trip Computer - The Way It Was Ment To Be

Post by Chris_C »

Here it is all... the black adder mod has finally been fitted. Certain electrics still need doing, after I toasted it on Friday, but nearly finished is a completely re-coded chip to drive the info centre LCD. This will be Chris programmable for different fuel tanks, etc, and will also mean I can use what sender I want, and make it do what I want, so I will actually have current speed readout (which the 300 taxi meter had, and this doesn't, and seems useful and more acurate than the dash speedo).

Also to be noted, by the cunning Chris-crafted optical fibres, is the funky traffic device I have, tried to get some of you to buy and is actually amazing. Tells you when traffic is coming up, so a) you don't fly into somebodies boot (not that Kar goes fast enough...) and b) means you can hop onto back roads to rush to catch the ferry you happen to be booked on, and leaves in 20 minutes  .

Fitted onto the black side will be my phone cradle when I finish the proper car kit install (by proper I mean Chris hacked.. none of this buying form Nokia rubbish) but thats a long way off.

Had to take photos in the dark, took a while to fit after work!

Now... to start work on my steering wheel plans, they are even more cunning, and I just need to get the prototype mounted....

I'm sure I have somewhere, I'll have to check for you mate! You need plug and loom? Is this for two int/ext temp gauge mods per chance ;)?

i know of a few 480's in the scrapyard, did they all come with the info centre? also did any 440/60's come with them.

what bits need to be taken off for it to work?

looks pretty nice.

Excellent stuff Chris! A very good idea indeed. I think the Info centre switch works well there. I've often been tempted to ditch the ashtray in order to find some space for some more useful and interesting items! Good work, all of these different areas people are modding makes sure no two 300's are identical, and there are so many ways in which you can customise a Volvo to suit your needs, tastes and requirements.

Cheers for the complements guys

I think... all 480's had the info centre (if not most did) and 440/60 turbos did, maybe some more. Its in the 3 gauge cluster dashboard, on the right there will either be a pair of needles for fuel and water temp, or a centre LCD.

Image

As for ease, the panels not dead simple, but thats becase I have my traffic thing and a random shape, it's all angles, so could be a lot simpler. As for electronics, it will be a lot easier when I have mine properly running with the car, the standard info centre is boased on either a 1.8T (B18FT) or whatever 2.0l they used, so uses injector timings for fuel usage. Adam is getting me the part number for the fuel flow sender needed for a 340 carb.

Other than that, if you have an ext temp gauge you have the amb sender (or can gaffer another somewhere) and you'll need a specific oil temp sender (about £20, but I already had one because of the 3 gauges where the radio goes)

Over the next little bit (when I get another cpu board that I havn't blown up...) I'm going to hook it all up to an analyser, and get the serial protocol for the LCD. I can then write my own CPU, and basically give people who are keen that, and it'll be a nice bolt in job. And can be customised ;)
