clean shaft. It was very nice. no vibration. no vibration. no sound. no balance. it's number ten. engineering wonder. I would recommend it to everyone. Turkish master. Turkish technician. I have been using it for months, no problem.

Wow! That looks really cool! How do the fittings compare with the standard shaft which has allen key bolts, I think. How much do you charge?

I might be looking for a 5-speed propshaft... actually I am looking to get an interesting spare one. Would you need a broken propshaft as part-exchange? I do not have one because I have never broken one - I don't do drag racing, or other monstrosities....

used the ends of my old shaft. the rest produced from scratch. 5 speed manual car. I've never had any problems so far. the car is driving very well. I'd like to help you, but I need milled ends of the shaft.

Still trying to contact this gentleman and been having propshaft thoughts, constructive ones, hopefully.

Drove to the new forest to pick up a broken propshaft from two slightly bemused gentlemen.













This one has the less common breakage - splines stripped rather than split rubber. Can the splines be repaired? Electroplating and recutting? What to do? The rubbers are good - too good to wreck. Sadican-1668 needs the splined ends, hmmm. Anyhow the prop is so clean I can take it to bed with me and dwell intensely on what to do.

Call to Propshaft Services Feltham: "No, we don't repair 'em". Can't argue with that. ;-0

A search for Reco-Prop Luton (recommended in one of the threads) shows they have gone bust.

Manifold titters abound.

My guts are howling with belly-ache, but my guardian angel is looking over me and here's the latest.

Thought: what's under those riveted panels? Is there a hole in the aluminium tube that would allow access to the back of the coupling?



So hand-drilled out the rivets and, blast, no hole! They must be there to balance the bolts.

Used a parallel pin punch to tap out the rivet stubs.

Next challenge was to remove the stubs from the tube. Water and shaking it up and down seems to have got them out.

Despite appearances, did try to research some of this before, but came up with nothing.

More homework shows that the manual prop shaft is 121 cm long, 7 cm wide and has the splined coupling split in 3 places 120 degrees apart, as shown above, to allow the clamp to tighten it.

In contrast the auto prop shaft is 116 cm long, 6 cm wide, has, as wisely pointed out in another thread, uncut splines:



and no room for a clamp! So the auto prop shaft is skinnier and the ends look more exagerated!

The above diameters are for the main part of the tube, i.e. not the wider ends. The lengths include the projecting splined bits, well, at least for the manual shaft.

You also get some more useful hits by googling for "intermediate shaft" rather than "prop shaft"!

Cool. I will email you. I actually have 5 now but still interested. These things become a bit of an obsession / ritual that's hard to break out of but still blooming interested. People have wanted anything between about £15 and £30 for them. Ta jc

Slow progress. The welder requested info on the composition of the ali and a material science analysis was eventually done by a very kind ex-colleague but the results were incomprehensible. Hence the welder tested different fluxes.



He decided on 5% silicon as the best and proceeded to weld two good halves together with an inner ali sleeve.



To do this he made a jig! The main part of the £170 cost was indeed for making the jig. Subsequent ones will be £60 plus VAT.





Anyway, there we go, a welded prop.



The plan is to take it for balancing next week which is likely to cost another £170.



Anyway, some more looks at the weld. Blobby, blobby, blobby.

Some really interesting development work there....!
