Front strut collapse

Last night i went over a bump in the road and there was a loud bang and the drivers side front end went down. A nasty smell of rubber and a lot of loud rubbing noises later, i decided i couldn't go on. I got recovered back to home, and today i had a good look at it. It appears the suspension strut spring cup had given way and the pressure from the spring has pushed it into the tyre :(

Are these widely available to buy new or will it need repaired somehow? It looks like it has failed due to rusting through around the spring cup.

It's made a good mess of my tyre, i'll have to get pics of it and the strut when i get round to fixing it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Dave

In a strange way i have an identical incident to thank for me even getting my car!!!
Yeh they are no problem at all you have two options really, find a strut casing from a scrappy and swap your insert.
Or Hadrian Repair panels make replacements at £3 summut each as i have just bought a pair to restore a set of struts!! Their website is www.carpanels.com
Good luck mate!!!

Not ANOTHER one?! This must be the fourth or fifth car this month alone (and I do mean alone - never heard of it before a couple of weeks ago!) which has suffered this problem. FOTV3 subscribers will know that this has been troubling those folks too.

Dai (Classicswede) has been offering to repair these struts on an exhange basis. I'm going to have a good look at mine shortly.

cheers

Haha.. Another one report's in. :D Two weeks ago GL's driver's side (left) strut spring cup broke down. :P The right side one went too few years ago. They can be welded or you can replace the whole thingy.

Would wax oiling protect them?

Where can i get the whole casing? I'm not having much luck finding any on the net. If not then it looks like a repair job, just takes more time i suppose. I've never heard of this beofore either until now :x Typical!

Maybe it helps to weld even before they collapse? In a preventing way i mean.

I have know of this problem for many years and been keen to get units repaired. I have a few here that I can repair up.

What type of finish would ppl prefer? I was thinking of powder coating them in black.

That sounds good Dai, yeah.

I've just heard that Hadrian have said that they can't get them...how long ago did you get yours Adam? There's a long and boring story here, which is why I'm interested...

George Mitchell reinforced his. I think I'll just go for coilovers instead :D

Basically, George tried them and they said no...rather rudely in fact. He asked who supplied them, and they told him - a company in Denmark or something. He called them, but they said that it was a PITA for them to supply directly....soo....amusingly, the supplier ordered Hadrian to send some to George sm56

He bought quite a few sets, so maybe Hadrian decided that discontinuing them was a mistake, and reversed their decision? Volvo (owner) POWAH!

cheers
