The engine now.... Wich to go for?

Post by 340cbr »

After the suspension I'm gonna made something to raise the power a little bit in my 340 1.7

Now it has the B172K with a 440GL Solex carburator. It's not bad but I wan't more

After talk with my associate in this project car, we have some options like:

1. Not swaping the engine:

option 1.1 - Change the head to a 440 GLT one, raising the compression ratio to 10.5:1

option 1.2 - Turbocharge this motor (low boost pressure)

2. Swaping the engine...

option 2.1 - to a complete B18FT from a 400 Turbo

option 2.2 - to a Clio/19 16v F16 Renault motor

Every of it have advantages and disadvantages.

What's your opinion? Wich is the best to go for? Advantages?

i'd go for the renault F16 engine as ive been thinking of getting one to strip, clean and add forged pistons etc, prolly add a turbo kit to it if all things works out right in the engine bay?

cheers

Hi 340cbr.
I've got B172K too, and I have a few questions :)
Did you change only carburator? Or meaby carburator with inlet manifold.
And what about exhaust manifold?
Sorry for my english... I'm not good at it ;)

Only the carb.

The exhaust manifold is different in the 440, but I don't think is that easy to put it in the 340 cause of the motor position...

But the carb gives you some difference

just wondering (again :P ) if the engine mounts on the F16 are same as the B172K?, any chopping with manifolds aswell trying to fit it in or would it be a custom exhaust?

cheers

i researched this in the late 90s .

basically the 16v will fit the bellhousing , but you cant be sure it has all the holes drilled for the rear drive configuration .

unsure if the head will fit straight over onto a 1.7 block , since it fits the 1.8 which is an overbored 1.7

if it did you would fly cut the turbo pistons for the valves , and have a low compression for turbocharging .

there may be issues with manifolding not being able to fit since it goes to a crossflow design .

if you see the pics of the forged rods ive shown , these would be ideal for the conversion , or a high power turbo lump .

i met a guy (well i worked with him for two weeks) who used to work at meccachrome and built a few 16v renaults , with diesel rods and 2 litre pistons , since they are huge apparently . the next mod would be some cams , and a remap would unleash 30 hp . over a std engine , not to mention the 2 litre version if you were going to build it .

The big problem with the 16v renault engine is the the air intake goes direct into the heater housing. I have measured it up. Not impossible to overcome.

Since the inlet manifold and the exhaust manifold are joined, yes we kept the 340 manifolds. The exhaust manifold from the 440 Gl is better though.

The F7P (1.8 ) and F7R (2.0) engines from Renault are a improvement from the 1.7 litre engine. In the Renault's the F7P (1.8L) uses the same gearbox (with slight differences in the gear ratio) from some F2N (1.7) engines. Therefore i think the engine will fit in the 340 and the housing for the rear drive configuration maybe will too.

I forgot to tell that both switches for the 400 Turbo engine or Renault F7P/F7R engine will also mean switch to fuel injection system :D

Best bang for the buck has to be the 1.7 turbo.

Maybe
The Renault engine will give 140...150 bhp non-supercharged, therefore the revs will go up in a uniform way. With the Volvo turbo engine, it means that at some point you will have a surge of torque that might be difficult to handle while in powerslide. I don't know which one to choose
