Rev counter and clock

Post by ebdl »

I'd like to fit a rev gauge in my mk.2 340 (I think Adam had one?). This will leave me without a clock... can I get a square one to fit the space on the other side of the ashtray to the cigar lighter? If anyone has either/both of these, PM me with a price incl. P&P and how you'd like to be paid. Unfortunately can't make the Ludlow meet.

Thanks, Ed

I think the rev counter plus speedo unit swapping for a clock with speedo only works as a drop in replacement for the cars with the Renix. This is coz the wiring for the rev counter is ready in place on these cars. The rpm signal comes from the Renix. On the earlier cars.... the rpm pickup is from somewhere else. Also, the onyl rev counters for the Mk2 pre 1983 cars is the smiths unit for the 2.0 cars. I dont think they made a rev counter for the 1.4 for Mk1 or 2 1.4 engine.

you could get an after market rev counter and use a spark lead as the rpm signal.....

I'm pretty sure I've heard of Renix cars being sans-wiring.

cheers

Hmm... ok, scrap the original idea. I'll think about an aftermarket jobbie.

from experience 1985 renix 1.4 have the same wiring for the dash for both clock + speedo cars and rev+speedo.

from memory...and i was told this a few years ago so its a bit rusty... but i think that previous to 1984 volvo made two types of bodyshell, 360 and 340. from 1984 onwards, apart from the boot section for the wheel of course, the rest of the shells were identical meaning mounting bolts for 340 and 360 parts are present on both cars. volvo therefore could make less panels overall in the factory.

post 84 it is possible to make a 340 into a 360 if you have all the pieces. I think that the wiring for all 300s was the same from this year onwards even if the car didnt have the accesories fitted...so wipers, fogs, speakers etc.....

my memory is clearest about 84 or 85 ( prob from 1984 therefore 1985 model year ) the shells are the same...

do all 360s have rev counters? ?

need papers from the archives to confirm all this though...... :)
Enjoy your 300s

Not all parts are the same. The 340 Front valance dosn't have foglight cut outs, but 360's have em

I believe if you look on the back the fixing points and holes are actually there for the fogs MJ, it's literally the cut out or hole that isn't there on the very front panel, or it's been like this on the few 340's I've looked at. Might also be a trap for road salt etc, leading to more corrosion in the 340 front valance?

All Mk3 360's had rev counters AFAIK, Mk2's I'd not like to say for sure, but GLT's would have had them.

There may well be something behind the valance, but there arn't any holes which I was pointing out, so the whole light has to be infront of the valance which dosn't look as clean.

Not on this car :P

I guess if the lights arn't very deap you could fit a front bodykit and mount the lights to that, as long as the bodykit dosn't involve drilling, riviting etc...

leah, a 1984 mk2 vdo dashed car did NOT have the wiring, nor was the dashboard capable of fitting a rev-gauge. i had to do a dash swap for another car (cant rememeber which one) then run a single wire from the reenix to the multi-pin at the back of the dash. wasnt a really hard job, just took some time to work out where to go to/from.

maisie, 1985 mk2 vdo dashed car had all the wiring and dash already in place to take teh rev counter
