It's a bit cold..

Post by Fuse »

Heh.. Temperature dropped kinda quick. It was somewhere around 0 celsius degrees yesterday. This is what temperature meter shows now. :P

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/jotain/temp.jpg

-18.6 Celsius degrees and I guess it's going to drop more and add the wind effect. :P Well I guess i'm "lucky" that I live at southern Finland. My friend lives at north and it's like -26 celsius degrees there.

Though no problems with Volvo. It started like under the palm tree when I started it without pre-heating today at school. Reliable motors, though I don't like to do much cold starts. There are no electricity sockets at university's parking lot so I have to do some..

Webasto, Ardic or similiar fuel heater would be nice, costs a lot though.

That doesn't bare thinking about... Is it a Northerly or Easterly wind which does that to Finland?

Impressive that your car can deal with it. At least I know that if the North Atlantic drift packs up I'll still be able to start my car :P

I reckon you need to lobby your school to sort out their car park!

Those are easterly winds which are doing that. :P

Volvo is fine in cold too as long as you make sure you got a good battery (lot's of startting power), some anti-ice in petrol tank (so condensed water doesn't ice the fuel lines), ethanol/methanol mixture in windshield washer tank and some good glycol in radiator. :P It's all about the correct fluids I guess. ;D

-18.6 Celsius degrees is -1.48 Fahrenheit degrees. :P

At north it's now -37C which is -34.6F.. So it's better to put some warm clothes on...

Couple days ago it was rather chilly weather outside, needed even to wear a shirt when going outside

At this moment temperature is still same.

Car started ok, but after little driving brake booster decided that it is too cold, it started to work again later luckily.

Gears are not very easy to operate when it is this cold, after few kilometers gearbox is starting to warm up, but before that it is better to avoid shifting gears as it is quite impossible to put 1st or 2nd in when car is moving.

Also economy is not too good when it is so cold and driving is short trips in city, I got around 16l/100km fuel consumption this week.

There was not many ppl at shop today when I walked there, it did not felt very cold but that is because of proper clothing, also face need to be covered as nose may froze otherwise :P

LOL, excellent email, I've seen something similar before! And Jani, ace pic. I thought it was cold here! It was only just above freezing here, and I was out in it messing about with the car! What a fool! On the way home it was starting to freeze. I understand on good authority that heat and cold in other countries is very different to our own in the UK, as I've never been abroad I can't be sure. But as it is quite damp in winter, it feels colder, the wind chill doesn't help either. Then in the heat, the humidity is worse in the UK, making it a clammy and nasty heat, instead of a dry warmth.

I think that it is not too dry here, relative humidity was around 86-89% when this cold weather arrived, but now it is much less, only 71%, also first cold days were quite windy too.

Now there is no wind at all so weather is rather ok, just too cold for working with car stuff :D
