Check Your Nuts (Girls too!)

Post by petefarrell360 »

Sat in traffic, minding my own business, BANG! What comes flying across and hits my windscreen, a wheelnut. Not best chuffed, three lovely chips, all well and truly grouped and means game over for my windscreen. Luckily the offending car was probably only doing 25 mph as a maximum as it was one of a row of cars leaving a roundabout on the opposite side of the road. Had I have had the chance they'd had received an earful, however, they'd long gone. What I'm wondering is if they lost the wheel as well!? If one is loose it probably means the rest were, it'd probably be all of nothing with wheel nuts, it'd be odd to forget one. So either some spanner monkey dropped a clanger or they themselves forgot to tighten it up, either way, I'm left with a knackered windscreen. I'm glad they weren't travelling any faster, as the noise and speed it hit at approx 25 mph with me stationary was bad enough, and any faster I think it'd probably have come through and hit me square between my eyes knowing my luck.

A motorcyclist was weaving through the traffic on my offside moments after it struck, I'd hate to think how that would have felt as a motorcyclist or pedestrian. Which is something I've often wondered about dodgy wheel trims, the ones you see scattered all over grass verges everywhere and wobbling like crazy on cars, just waiting to fly off and hit some innocent person as they aren't securely fixed and need cable ties! I think one of those stiking you at speed would tickle to say the least.

So, make sure your nuts are nice and tight is my advice.

Bad luck Pete, that sucks!!

I know how you feel though, completely different situation but some numpty has reversed into my Manta (whilst it was parked outside my garage) and put a big scratch/dent in the tailgate and cracked the spoiler in half, and then driven off. Not best amused!

We randomly lost 2 nuts and half lost the locking one from a wheel on the 940. Bear in mind that alloys have more play in them, so need to be checked periodically...they're more prone to working loose.

cheers

Carl, now that is annoying, I hate it when people think they can get away with causing damage like that. Scum of the earth people like that, often they think, oh old car, that'll be ok and similar things. Was it Ronnie that experienced something similar with his 360?

Sat there after it happened, I was in some ways thankful it was glass, which is more easily replaceable, although it's still a hassle and costly, than say the middle of my mint bonnet or the roof etc getting a hooge dent and scratch from the impact.

I suppose in many ways the driver may not be to blame, or not in such a direct way, as they are probably unaware that they've caused any damage, unlike reversing into someone, causing damage, knowing full well, but deciding to leave and hope no one spots them. However, as a driver it is their responsibility to check the car is safe and of a well maintained standard to use on the road, i.e. making sure the wheel nuts are actually on the car, and not being propelled through the air at high speed.

Ouch.. nasty! Unlucky mate. The good thing is that 300 screens arent stupidly expensive to replace because they're not bonded in as modern cars are.

Yes, I was annoyed, to say the least. And I've got a good idea of who did it from position and type of damage that's been caused. But of course, no way to prove it! :x

Does you insurance cover windscreen replacement? If so its normally only £50. Even if you havent I cant see it being much over £150 anyway (not that makes it any better I know). As you say though, it could have been much more costly if it had hit some paintwork!!

Currently I need to look into the cover situation......... It may end up being a swap from one of my other cars, and either attempt it myself, or pay a professional to swap it. As Steve says, at least it's not bonded in!

I was gonna ask Carl, any idea of who is responsible. Any marks of paint etc left on their car, anything would be enough for me! I'm waiting for the day when some chump damages mine in a car park, it's gonna happen, no matter how much I try and park away from muppets. I think I'd go on a man (or woman) hunt until I found the culprit, it's just so inconsiderate, it may be old, it may be a Volvo, but it's mine, I paid for it, and I look after it. I've often been sat waiting in the car and given people the glare treatment as they're just about to swing the door open carelessly, seems to work! It's just you're not always there when it happens sadly.

Carl, it might even be worth trying you luck, approach them as ask them in a non confrontational way if they know anything, then if they plead ignorance or innocence, and you're sure it was them, say you've got CCTV rigged up, or a neighbour saw them do it. It can work a treat if used wisely.

My parents had their 460 hit in a car park on the o/s rear door, arch and light, witnesses saw the bloke get tangled up in it, then drive off knowing what he'd done. Luckily the people who'd seen him do it knew where he lived and in a round about way we knew of him. He avoided us in the following weeks, and when confronted claimed he wasn't even there. Paint on his vehicle was from our car. Needless to say he didn't want to know and wouldn't admit it, scum. Then a few weeks later someone opened a car door on the n/s arch, a previously clean and tidy car bashed about by careless, inconsiderate muppets in a few weeks of being left out in public without an armed guard.

Andy, glad they're in their rightful place. And as Foggy says, if you've got alloys, you might be more prone to loose nuts.

I once had a guy make a big dent in my old 360 parked outside my dads work. I confronted him, he refused to take responsibility (I saw him do it and went over straight away). He had just parked out side his house and didn't care. I never bothered to chase it up as the car was in a state anyway.

Two months later his house burnt down due to shoddy electrical wiring. People always get what they deserve in the end.

sorry to hear of that Pete,

reminds me of when I was a lad and people used to have those long whippy aerials on there cars,

they were supposed to be clipped down but the boy racers of the time used to leave the ends loose ,

Anyway one day a custom van went past a lady who was standing too near the kerb and the aerial cut her on the neck,

the wound became infected and she was rushed to hospital

doctors said it was the worst case of (wait for it )

van aerial disease they had ever seen

Fucking hell, Mick - that's terrible!!!

Bad luck Pete, at least you didn't get it straight between the eyes - didn't someone get a good quote recently for a new winscreen, ebdl maybe? Yeah it was me who got scraped parked outside my house. I've managed to forget how much the repair bill came to with plenty of positive thinking and voluntary amnesia.

Worse luck still, Carl - there are a lot of flaming idiots out there. If you think you know who did it then just pour a few pounds of sugar into their petrol tank - that should sort them right out...
