Went to swap the cam back to the original A-cam today and spotted a nasty slit in the cambelt so went and bought a replacement, spent all damn day getting the fan off (3 rounded bolts in the end and a lot of shouting and swearing!) but now I can't work out how to hold the crank still to get the nut off for the end pulley. The haynes book of lies tells you that there's 6 bolts on the end which would be a lot easier but instead theres just a massive central one! On my 340 I can see a window in the bell housing where you could jam the flywheel but can't see that on the 360 plus its too low to get underneath and I can't get it up ramps
Nah its ok, Pettaw has sent me in the right direction... correct answer is remove the crank position sensor and jam a correct sized bolt in there. I did try leaving it in gear but theres just too much flex in it still needs to be totally solid
yeah but be bloody careful that you get the correct sized bolt to jam into the hole cos those holes are the detection holes for the Renix unit, so any damage to them means new flywheel time.
Basically though, as long as you get the biggest bolt you can get in there, you'll be OK.
Hmm, I think there is hole at alternator side of engine, plugged but when you remove plug (or was it bolt???) there is hole and you can use that to keep crank still, that is reason why it is there
Just use a large socket and a long bar on the crank pulley and wedge the bar on the ground.

I think what rupert meant to add on the end of his little part, was with the bar resting on the ground in the correct orientation, you pull a coil lead and just flick the starter and voila, the engine undoes that stubborn bolt for you.
Used this method on an audi quattro once. Certainly makes you clench ya ass cheeks as you flick the starter.
