Hi there,
New user here (just found after much googling) and I was wondering if you can help us.
I'm looking for a late model 1.7 340 in 3-door format preferably. I've tried a lot of places so far with no luck so I was wondering if you lot would be able to help.
I'm stranded without a car and have cash waiting, so if you have something that might be of interest then please drop us a line at astraboy_uk@yahoo.co.uk
cheers in advance,
astraboy.

Redline,
Hi there, I'm located in the staines area. Also thanks for the list you provided, thats a lot of cars to consider.
I think I'm going to have to learn the difference between a 340 and a 360, but I'm sure the answers can be found on here somewhere :D
I have found a red three door which I'm looking at this weekend, but if there are any other cars that you think I might like then please let me know.
Regards,
astra.

the 360 has a 2 litre volvo engine - this is really the only difference.

What? Apart from the drivetrain being different to take the power/torque of the 2.0 :P

There are many differences, such as location of spare wheel and patrol tank, but the main difference is the engine, 1.4 & 1.7 in 340, 2.0 in 360, and as Steve says, a stronger driveshaft for the 360

I must admit

(he says ducking behind the sofa to avoid sharp objects being thrown at him )

If I had my time again I would go for a 360 2.0 gle or glt , (that ebay gle is calling me although I would prefer a saloon ),
if only for the power steering lecky windows and slight power increase

trouble is they didnt do the redline in that spec

Meh, you's pays your money, and takes your choice.

Either go for the slightly oversteery 340, or the slightly understeery 360. Late 340's came with all the same toys as 360's tbh. What do you want the car for? If you just want transport, then I'd prolly go for a late 340 or 360 GLT; if you want easy to drop in straight line speed, any 360; drifting, 1.7 340.

Well, thats what I'd do!

well you answered my question with your last post chris. i'm gonna use it for a drift car while my m3 powered e36 has its engine rebuilt.
so the 340's oversteer do they?
340 it is 8)

how much are you looking to pay for a 300 ?

I'm willing to pay the going rate for the right car, but tbh, I'm a little in the dark about prices, plus I want to set some aside for suspension mods.

Theres not that much difference in the handling, I've noticed it when driving my 40s and 60s though, and mucking round with a few in the motorclub down here, the 40s do slide quicker, though have a lil bit less torque than a GLT. 60s you really have to push it, or use a bit of handbrake first. Having said that, I don't drift properly, only if I want to stot the chavv'd up festa from trying to hump my bootlid usually, or to get round a hairpin on the lanes

My first 360 (when it had the crap tyres) was driftastic, and a little scary in the wet TBH. I even spun it once. My 340 was just as driftastic, but at lower speeds.

A decent set of tyres transformed the 360 though - it meant you could push it hard even in the wet/gravel/mud without fear of dieing! But of course, because of the relative lack of power you lost the powerslide ability unless you really provoked it - in this sort of fashion:

Yeah it does seem that the 1.7s are the drifters choice, only people that have actually tried both properly are Nev and some other guys from essex at the arena. I also feel my 340 1.4 would slide at much much lower speeds but didn't have the grunt. The 360 will slide just as much but you have to use the extra power for it to happen. The 1.7 might therefore be the best of both worlds if it still slides around as much as the 1.4 but with the extra poke.

you can get either very very sideways - the 360 naturally understeers more (although, in comparison to the mondie - both cars understeer when not under power) but under gas the reverse is true - the 360 would make a better drifers car i think.

i spun nessy about 6 times :D
