Photo Competition, improvement suggestions etc.

Here is few suggestions from other thread

-Only new photos should be used
-There should be names next to pictures, not anonymous
-Entrants should not be voting self as a rule, but just allowed to do so if they wish
-Anonymous pictures is good

Ok, so word is free, state what is your opinion to these and if you have some other things you would like to share please do so :D

Once we know what is everyones opinion to these subjects we can see what most of us wants and we go that route then.

One thing to discuss is what to do if we get very little number of pictures? Do we go by a book or should we make some changes to book then? (book=rules)

Also discussion from these and more is allowed, but make sure you quote those few things and post agree or disagree next to each line so even I can keep track of this, my brain is very soft you know, must be very clear

-Only new photos should be used
Not sure about this one - I mean if you've got some old photos that fit the bill then why shouldn't you be allowed to use them. Equally saying only new ones can be used should motivate people create even more imaginative pics of the 300s
-There should be names next to pictures, not anonymous
Agree, as said on the other thread we know most people's cars anyway, so to make it fair all the names should be listed so we know eveyones.
-Entrants should not be voting self as a rule, but just allowed to do so if they wish
Agree, I think we can trust everyone here to vote for the best, rather than their own just to make it win

Unsure, but leaning towards agreeing with this, as it makes it a bit more interesting, rather than seeing people submit the same photos we've seen before

I think this is irrelevent, all the regular posters (who seem to be the only ones participating) have very distinctive cars, steve's kitted saloon, adam's 340GLT, Nessy to name but 3, If you where bothered which car was who, then it wouldn't take a master researcher to work them out.
jtbo wrote:-Entrants should not be voting self as a rule, but just allowed to do so if they wish
Agree If there isn't one that stands out, I will vote for myself (mainly so I don't get 0!)

One point I'd like o throw in is that i think all photos should be self taken\

I say this mostly on the grounds that it puts everyone on a level (ish) playing field. The sports one is a good example of this, as I presumed the idea was that the photo had to have been taken by yourself and Carl's entry for one was obviously not taken by him, but by a professional sports photographer. If i knew this where permitted (as well as old photographs) I'd have dug out the photo of my mum's 340 towing a caravan onto the Vehicle deck of the Val De Loire, which was taken by a man that only takes photos of cars driving onto that boat at that port, and hence has it spot on everytime.

I think old photos can be used, particularly for some of the difficult subjets for some people. If a picture is already available, I don't really see why it can't be entered - the voters decide the winner anyway :)

You just want to use your bridge photo!

Actually I had my camera on a tripod with the 30sec timer going. It was daylight when I started trying to get the photo :)

OK maybe not, but that's a good point that I never considered.

But then what happens if one of our members is a professional photographer? I've only got a cheap camera and I don't have a clue how to use all the settings, it stays on auto - someone who even knew the slightest things about that would have a distinct advantage over me. I dont think it'll ever be a level playing field. At the end of the day it's just a bit of fun, so I think any photo with a 300 in it should be able to enter, as long as its your own (ie not pilfered off the net somewhere).

EDIT: Also, a good rule to bring in if we decide old photos are allowed is that a photo can only be submitted once - it cannot be used for subsequent rounds.

To elaborate, old pictures if you took them, and they really do fit the subject perfectly, should be allowed, providing they've not been photoshopped etc. IMO. Things that you can not recreate, such as maybe a foreign holiday snap involving your car or something. If it's going to mean someone enters the comp as they've got a pic, rather than not bothering at all it's a good thing I think. However a new pic would be best if possible.

Although we know the cars of most members, I was guessing that the beautiful 3 door GLT was indeed Bilbo's entry or his brother, but I couldn't be sure. Chris's car wasn't in his pic, but the steam involvement made me quite sure that was his, but only people who know him quite well would have known it. My car stand out like a saw thumb with the stupid lights on the front. MJ's was so clean it had to be his car! I think some people will always be able to guess some of the entrants pictures one way or another, but the odd unknown one for me makes it more interesting. Also that way if people are very clever in how they use their own car, their picture may be judged less on their actual car, and more on the task and the quality of the picture. So anonymous is the way to go I think.

As I said in the actual competition this time, I haven't voted for myself in either of the two comps so far. A because my first pic was pants, but I wanted to join in, it's the taking part and all that........ and secondly, I didn't want to waste my vote, when I could see a far better picture that someone else had taken. I personally didn't mind receiving 0 votes, but on the other hand I have absolutely no objections to anyone voting for themselves, I just think it should be optional!

Fantasic! Good caption for that pic!

I honestly never thought I'd win the 2nd round with my picture, once again I had to resort to the crappy phone camera, as it was the only working camera, or camera I could connect to my PC! So, Carl, it appears as though the actual camera doesn't matter too much!

Good ideas chaps, with some tweaking this should become a part of V3M as a fun, enjoyable, (motivational too, in as much as people might clean their cars for the pics!) section.

Current situation is this:
-Only new photos should be used
Yes 0 Unsure 2 No 2
-There should be names next to pictures, not anonymous
Yes 1 Unsure 1 No 1
-Entrants should not be voting self as a rule, but just allowed to do so if they wish
Yes 3 Unsure 0 No 0

If someone could confirm I got it right, that would be great, thanks :)

Carl's suggestion was:

I lean towards that whatever pic is new or old, it should be used only once, do you agree?

d3k4y0's suggestion was:

This too is what I do agree, what kind of photo competition it is not you that takes pic, but again you decide, I just use my Veto if needed

But why there is only so little number of votes casted here? Voting % is something around 50-66% :P Just waking up you lazy voters

Ah, but if old photos are banned then a resubmitted photo will be an old one and wont be allowed so that rule would only apply if we decide it's ok to use old ones :)

It depends on what the competition is about - it should be about the cars surely? In which case it shouldnt matter who has taken it as long as there's a Volvo in it.

But it would be silly to allow me to enter a fantastic Volvo photo I found on google images. This is a photo comp about photographic skill, with Volvos being the subject. We surly must have to take them ourselves :)

That's why I said it should be your own car in the photos so we know it's not been nabbed from somewhere else :)

But I could get a freind to take the phots if they're a great photographer... A photo competition is about how good a photo you can take based on a subject, this being any volvo :)

Right, well judging by the suggestions and ideas, I'll gfet my backside into gear and get the next competition going possibly tomorrow evening....... watch this space people! :D I'm hoping it should make people be somewhat creative and there is the option for humour in this one!

That's my point - it's about the cars. Personally I'd rather see some really good photos of our cars rather than worry about who's taken them. Pete proved last round that professional photos on a professional camera cant necesserily compete against a normal guy with a camera phone :)

Well I'm easy either way TBH, it's all a bit of fun at the end of the day. We'll let Pete decide what is best for the next round based on what everyone has said!
