Nessy tune-up and radiator

Post by foggyjames »

After 11k miles in my ownership, I thought it was about time that I treated Nessy to a new dizzy cap, rotor arm and lead set, triggered by a misfire. The ignition components made a subtle improvement (#4 lead was clearly knackered anyway), but it didn't fix the poor idle, which I eventually managed to trace to the idle solenoid having a blob of gunk on it. This probably got in a week or so earlier when Andy insisted (quite rightly) than I tighten the carb nuts down.

Anyway, I'd just finished that when the radiator inlet (which Hugh had attached with 'liquid metal' to limp it to Devon where it would be layed up for a year) was finally knocked off my a clumbsy...er....me. I have contemplated going to get some more JB Weld type stuff, but decided to fit my (not quite a drop in) eBay special radiator - a Unipart GRD 814.

This involved shortening the top hose, as the inlet is higher, and the full-length hose would now foul on the spare wheel. I also had to re-thread the temp sender hole (but the metal is soft enough for this to be done using the sender itself, plus some WD40 as lubricant). While I was at it, I fitted a new sender. The hole isn't in the same place either, but its at the same height and the wires stretch easily.

Anyway....pics!

As was...

Cleaned up and repainted, where necessary. Flat panel is factory paint - there is some good stuff on Nessy!

Finished product...

Nessy has had airhorns since about March! They're Stebel GP2s....Italian made, and with a very nice tone. You can even get a preview at www.stebel.it.

I'm sure it's thinner than a 360 rad (and is the same as the one which came out)....but that unit does fit the profile of a 360 /w AC radiator.

cheers

You wanna listen to the sample of the "In the summertime" set from Stebel. It starts off ok, but then I think the guy who designed them must have hit the crack pipe a bit hard, and it all goes horribly wrong...
