Manifold Temperature.... & .... New backbox

Post by Sam340 »

Bit of a random question........

Does anyone know how hot a manifold gets on a car? :?:

I recently fitted a downpipe and couldnt get it to seal properly at the manifold... used some exhaust putty around it but it just cracked and fell off.... gonna take pipe off and re-fit..

Have borrowed some Metal flexi sealant from work... it says it can cope to up to 300 degrees C.
Will this be ok u reckon....?

Also on the subject of exhausts i am gonna have to replace the centre and rear section.. have kind of got used to loudness of blowing exhaust... might buy a aftermarket Backbox...... i guess i have to use a universal one.......dont want anything too chavvy or boomy.......anyone had any experience or suggestions?

forget it.

exhaust manifold can get up to 800'C

friend of mine once had a defective ignition unit, that caused his manifold to glow dark red..

Just changing the backbox will make it a bit deeper at low revs and a little bit louder up top but not a lot i'd think. Thats what happened on my 1.4 anyway, however all i've done is swap the backbox on my 2L and its bloody loud all the time!

Hmm have had a look at some boxes on ebay.... nothing subtle enough on there at the moment.....

How did you hang your bacbox Ali?

Did you have to weld hangers on or were they convieniently in the right place, most ive seen dont have any at all?
Then I guess you just cut the rear exhaust section just before the box and then attach.... but then in most casesit may not necceserily line up with the pipe going into the box?? :?

On the first backbox I had on the car I cut the mounts off the old standard backbox and welded them onto the new backbox (as it was mild not stainless steel). Instead of cutting up the standard exhaust section just before the backbox I removed the whole backbox section and used flex-pipe to connect from the middlebox section to the backbox. I've done the same thing on my 360 now and the backbox is just held up with 1 home made bracket on the piping and some electrical wire round the backbox!

I've stil got Ali's back box in the garage, unused (couldn't get it to fit due to the different down-pipe positions, 1.4 - 1.7) If you want it, I'll take an offer. Ali can fill the details in, all i know is it's a Peco Big-Bore (looks to be 2.5 inches)

If you can post up a picture of the backbox I could be interested!! :)

Went to volvo yesterday to get a manifold to downpipe gasket... called first and they ummed and aad about the part for about 10 mins... had to pay up front over the phone...£5.11 !! got there and saw it and knew it wasnt right....was a solid ring about 10mm thick....

They maintained that it was right very arrogant .... took it home .. suprise suprise wrong bit... Does anyone know what it is supposed to look like so i can go back with some ammo...i was expecting a flimsy bit of metal!

what's the engine in your car? I'm assuming that its a 1.7. If so, I've a funny feeling that the front downpipe doesn't have a gasket, its just a flanged fitting which you tighten the cr*p out of and it seals. Vadis shows a part number but its for the later chassis numbers, very late ones, which probably had catalysts, which have a slightly different manifold that incorporates that seal, and it is like a doughnut of some sort according to the diagram.

Ali....... some of the finest bodgery i have ever seen...like you say inspiration!! am on the look out for a bacbox now although am talking to turbohaus about a new engine  so may actually need a different exhaust altogether.....

Pettaw.
Yes mine is the 1.7 engine and the downpipe has a trumpet type ending on it and the reverse on the manifold. Doesnt look like it needs a gasket although i cant get it to seal properly.... have had it Off & On 3 times....still leaks ( badly )!
