Went to bovingdon airstrip yesterday for a driftworks practice day.
Still havnt lowered my car or welded diff so didnt take part but went along to watch and meet some people.
Was a really good day out.
Sid and Nev were representing the Growing 340 drift population and were doing some impressive twinning throughout the day........ Sid took me out in the rain for a quick lap and I was very impressed with the way the car Lapped it up!!
I can safely say that after yesterday i am hooked so watch this space!!
Bovingdon is only a few miles from my old house, thats the place I was trying to get booked out for a V3M gymkhana. Who organised the day? I'll see what I can do about getting it for us lot. It's a great place, ex airstrip, has a market on Saturdays usually, and stock car etc on Sundays, but looks like it's possible to get a day in. Just depends on what price they are after now.
Drift practice day took part at the far end of one of the runways, I know how much was paid for the hire of the venue this weekend and could probably organise something in terms of hiring it out.
What did you have in mind Chris?
Think they are becoming stricter on car events being run there, as apparently there have been complaints from the neighbours!
Only down side is the surface there is very rough.... is very coarse concrete rather than tarmac!
Few cones, set out an auto test, theres no way you could do a speed run cos of the surface as you say, I remember when I used to take Kar there it was bumpy. It would make a great autotest though, or even a small lap could be laid out, one on at a time. I'll try and find the orig thread. Can you pm me the cost, I'll see if it is in line with the other track I have been looking at booking for us.
Thats the email address of the bloke that sorted out the drift day over on driftworks so might be worth contacting him Chris, also we might have more luck with a track day there as not many of our cars are loud *runs to look for silencer plate*
Ah ok no problem Chris, he posted it over on Driftworks which has a much larger number of members so I don't think he minds people seeing the email address but good thinking incase
Taken from Driftworks
I have arranged PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE to keep us all safe and legal
The land is only costing £200
Public liability insurance is £210
Sod it, get the phone number, I'm sure a number of Wessex would be keen even if we don't get confirmed numbers from here.
I knew that it would be cheap, I just failed miserably to find any contact details before. That dude who you gave me the email of sort the insurance too? 210 for a day ain't bad at all. Right, creating a thread in Calendar.
If it's run under a MSA gymkhana permit (and you need a permit for it to be legal), the cost of the permit (currently around £16) includes public liability insurance to cover the organisers. I can't remember the exact cover, but I think it protects the organisers from being sued if you trash the venue or something - it won't cover anyone if competitors crash into each other! I would imagine you could get extra cover for that, but I don't know about costs. As it's on private land, your road insurance won't cover you (and most road policies don't cover motorsport anyway)
Yeah at the drifting they also had two cars on track at once, perhaps the insurance would be easier/cost less if we did an autotest setup with only one car on track at once
I think the situation with the recent event was it was meant to be for a few friends on DW...
Few more people became interested an there was talk of a tyre van coming down, and food (Bacon Butties) being served........... there were several (heated) discussions on DW about issues like insurance and if it was needed etc. ....and I think Danny just took out the insurance to be on the safe side.
Its better to keep these things low key... at the end of the day the organiser will be responsible for what takes place at the event and to the venue owner so obviously a smaller event is easier to manage..
The police came down on saturday but saw that it was just a group of friends (15 or so cars having a laff) and passed by.
Not suggesting in anyway that V3m members would cause any trouble but the longer people manage the events well and have no problems then track / car events will continue to take place there..... they banned them a while ago because of complaints from the neighbours etc and a number of 'incedents' that took place... wouldnt take much for it to happen again............
