Vehicles causing the most pollution in central London are to face huge increases in the congestion charge, mayor Ken Livingstone has announced.

The daily charge for vehicles in carbon emissions band G - which includes 4x4s - is to rise from £8 to £25 from 2009

Mr Livingstone also announced that a 90% residents' discount given to people living within the congestion charging zone will be withdrawn for vehicles in band G.

outrageous, and they need those 4x4's to get baby tarquin to school safely or achieve single figure fuel economy. should be at least a £1000 an hour in cities.....

I think by doing the residents reduction they're trying to keep us country folk out, with 4x4's that actually go off road and have real mud on them!

It's ridiculous, I wouldn't go near the place if I could help it, however work forces me to go there for the big Lawyers and Solicitors and so on for their furniture, reception desks etc! As a trade I can absorb £5 a day, but also get stung for parking, if I can find any, but £8 got silly, then I think a rise to a tenner is planned before this stupid hike to £25. The problem is, the rich with their fuel drinking beasty 4x4's will pay it, if they can afford such vehicles and to run them when they don't need them. It's the people who can't afford it now, but must travel into London with a vehicle that it will affect. If I can't pass this extra tax onto my clients, I'll stop working in Central London, for the odd day I may need to nip back to a site to collect something, do a site survey, I could be in more desirable places actually earning money!

As I and a few other trades said when it happened, it was slipped in as another tax, and too many people accepted it. If a stand against it had been made, there might not be this situation now. Lets just hope road charging systems are in place in the near future. x amount per mile, I certainly wouldn't be participating in that one!

Cars get slated for causing this,that and the other-reality is airtravel is the major cause- do some research and see what happened in the States when flights were cancelled in the US for 2 days after 9/11-draw your own conclusions.

My old man has a small block chevy 350ci on gas as you do.

Indeed it is a Fixed OR Repaired Daily.They do a 351 but can't get 'em with man box-I'm no fan of auto's.
