New boot struts dude! Common failure, the boot struts are probably still strong enough to hold the boot without the weight of the spoiler.

Spot on, or that the non spoiler struts have been fitted, which aren't of such a high rating.

As Pete says , there are two different ratings on the boot struts , one type for cars with spoilers and one for those without ,
just make sure you order the right ones if you replace them .
secondhand struts are not usually worth bothering with because they are usually just as weak as the ones you have taken off
iirc I think you have to save the boot light switch from your old strut as new ones do not come with it fitted ,
I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong about this.

Nope, you're right Mick! One of the struts has a wire going to it, save the part of the strut that connects to that wire. The sockets of the ball and socket joints unscrew. You may find you need a bit of plastic tube to make the screw contact the right length on the new strut, else the light will never go off!

Are they still available form Volvo?
Or is it just secondary market that needs the mod?

Never tried Volvo tbh, mine were from German and Swedish... Something like £20 for a pair of spoiler ones.

I don't like the seconadry market ones on the 240 as they only last about 12 months. It doesnt make sense as the original ones last for 15 - 20 years.

Yeah, I know what you mean, someone put a brand new, supposedly uprated pair on my 360, never seemed any good from the start.

I do agree Dai, although I got 4 years out of the GSF ones. Anyone know if Volvo does still do them?
