pair of rear clusters

Post by oli »

need some working ones with working bulb holders as well

for a G reg 340 5 door if thats and different

Mine are tempremental especially the reversing lights. I fond the push in and turn holders popping out loose and think these are affecting them working......

Somewhere......... by Chris_C is a guide on repairing the ground wires, by making a better one of you own. Otherwise check the ground connections, clean all the contacts and you should be fine. If your lenses aren't broken, or the reversing lenses falling out, I'd leave them alone, changing them probably won't help much.

They are normally a good fit and don't fall out. I can't really think what to suggest, as I can't see any reason why your lights should be any different to anyone elses causing them to be a problem. There are no signs of anyone having changed anything before that could be wrong? I seem to think the parts that clip in could be plastic, so you might be missing a clip or two, in which case the actual bulb holder would be the best part to acquire.

The metal strip corrodes, changing the cluster won't help I'm afraid. The post is around somewhere, needs to be found and posted in the new how to section!!!

Until it is, here are the pictures, that should give you a clue as to what to do!

well the connectors from the wiring to the bulb holders are a bit corroded... and fiddling and aplying with them did bring some of the lights back to life but neither of the reversing lights are working no matter how much I twiddle them.

The bulb holder and the bulbs themselves are a bit loose. ie. push bulb in and twist to lock and they still push up a little and dont stay pushed in fully.

I'll check those pics in a minute but looks like you soldered them on?

Yeah, basically checked with a multimeter first, to see I had a good 12V feed when the light was supposed to be on, then cleaned up the bulb holder terminal with a fibreglass pencil (only do this if you are soldering straight away, else the glass pencil creates thousands of tiny scores that will corrode even worse!) Then solder a wire to the eath tag, and crimp a ring to the other eng of the wire, and screw it to the main screw that earths the strip of metal in the cluster! I never had any trouble after that!

300's have really bad rear clusters for some reason, you always see them with either one, none, or flashing reversing lights!

That sounds like the reverse light switch, have a look under the gear gaitor to check its adjusted properly

Good call mate, which I maybe very too briefly put in my write up, might need to put something more than "Check you have voltage with a multimeter!"

that sounds too easy?

literally pull the gaitor off and check to see if its seated properly?

hmm maybe this should be in the technical bit... sorry for messing it up heh

Your wish is my command ;)

For the switch, the leather gaiter comes off with the surround, which is one screw in the big cubbyhole, then it slides forward and off (remove the pin in the gaiter to lift it off. Then I think you can get to it without removing the handbrake/gear surround, then off comes the rubber gaiter, and you can see it!

hmm

I had a quick look and theres a white plastic pivot switch that 'switches' when you select reverse (when it clicks over)

also found a brown wire with spade connector floating around that obviously goes to something.... In reverse I touched the metal but nothing as I assume it needs to be grounded?

any way it was dark so I'll check it when its light.
